This study investigated volatiles in 16 developed blends, in which egg whites were partially replaced with white and crimini mushrooms (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) and then roasted and steamed, resp. A solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry anal. identified ~50 volatiles in raw egg whites, while the number of volatiles increased to over 70 in steamed and roasted egg whites. Compared to raw egg white, the total volatile abundance did not significantly change, but alcs., ketones, heterocyclic compounds, and sulfurs significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) in cooked egg whites. When egg whites were substituted with 30% mushrooms, the total volatile abundance increased 8-11 times, compared to egg white alone. The dominant volatiles in the egg white-mushroom blends were aldehydes and alcs. followed by ketones, heterocyclic compounds, and sulfurs. Increases in the mushroom proportions led to a significantly higher peak abundance of all volatiles in the blends except sulfurs. Crimini imparted higher amounts of heterocyclic compounds, and white mushrooms had higher sulfurs. Compared to the steam method, roasting significantly increased pyrazines in the blends. This study demonstrated the contribution of mushroom volatiles to egg whites, three impact factors, and the potential utilization of mushroom in food product development.

Previous studies on the application of a novel multifrequency ultrasound washing treatment have proven to be effective in guaranteeing microbial safety, and enhancing the quality of cherry tomato. Nevertheless, there is still a need to evaluate the effect of these treatments on the metabolic activity, volatile profile, and sensorial quality of the fruit. This study evaluated the above parameters of cherry tomato treated with optimized assisted and un-assisted multifrequency ultrasound. The treatments slightly enhanced the enzyme activities and inhibit ethylene production and respiration rate. The results indicated that the treatment with 20/40 kHz and aqueous ozone (0.85 ± 0.2 mg/L) for 10 min enhanced and maintained the volatile compounds (VC). Out of the 44 identified VC, one had odor activity value > 1 and thereby considered as active aroma compound contributing significantly to the aroma of the sample. E-nose anal. indicated that alc., terpenes, and some aromatic compounds are the core indicators of the significant sensors. PCA showed that the processing methods had an influence on the flavor indexes of the tomatoes. The result verified that all the washing techniques did not result in a substantial neg. effect on the tomato, and the treatment with ultrasound and ozone proved to be the best.

The use of a topical ERL skin treatment instead of the currently available ERL tablets may be appealing to treat skin disorders while reducing adverse systemic effects and exposure. A method to prepare 0.2% ERL cream, without resorting to a pure active pharmaceutical ingredient, was developed and the formulation was optimized to improve ERL stability over time. Erlotinib extraction from tablets was incomplete with Transcutol, whereas DMSO (DMSO) allowed 100% erlotinib recovery. During preliminary studies, ERL was shown to be sensitive to oxidation and acidic pH in solution and when added to selected creams (i.e., Excipial, Nourivan Antiox, Pentravan, and Versatile). This study monitors the presence of 88 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (semi-VOCs) at the gas phase of seven indoor settings in a school in the city of Tarragona, Spain, and five outdoor locations around the city. The VOCs and semi-VOCs monitored were solvents (∑Solvents), aldehydes (∑Aldehydes), emerging organic compounds (∑EOCs), and other VOCs and semi-VOCs (∑Others). Passive sampling campaigns were performed using Carbopack X tubes followed by thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatog. with mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS). Overall, 70 of the target compounds included in the method were determined in the indoor air samples analyzed, and 42 VOCs and semi-VOCs in the outdoor air samples. Our results showed that solvents were ubiquitous throughout the school at concentrations ranging from 272μg m-3 to 423μg m-3 and representing 68%-83% of total target compounds (∑Total). The values of ∑Total in 2021 were three times as high as those observed at the same indoor settings in 2019, with solvents experiencing the greatest increase. A plausible explanation for these observations is the implementation of anti-COVID-19 measures in the indoor settings, such as the intensification of cleaning activities and the use of hydroalcoholic gels as personal hygiene. The ∑Total values observed in the indoor settings evaluated were twenty times higher than those found outdoors. ∑Solvents were the most representative compounds found indoors (74% of the ∑Total). The concentrations of VOCs and semi-VOCs observed in the outdoors were strictly related to combustion processes from automobile traffic and industrial activities, with ∑Others contributing 58%, ∑Solvents 31%, and ∑Aldehydes 11% of the ∑Total. EOCs, on the other hand, were not detected in any outdoor sample.

N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)-based bacterial communication through quorum sensing (QS) is one of the main causes of biofouling. Although quorum quenching (QQ) has proven to be an effective strategy against biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for municipal wastewater treatment, its applicability for industrial wastewater treatment has rarely been studied. This is the first study to isolate QQ strains from the activated sludge used to treat industrial wastewater containing toxic tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone. The two QQ strains from genus Bacillus (SDC-U1 and SDC-A8) survived and effectively degraded QS signals in the presence of TMAH. They also showed resistance to toxic byproducts of TMAH degradation such as ammonium and formaldehyde. They effectively reduced the biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and mixed community of activated sludge. The strains isolated in this study thus have the potential to be employed to reduce membrane biofouling in MBRs during the treatment of TMAH-containing wastewater.

From the pseudo-ternary phase diagram, the surfactant:co-surfactant mixture (Smix) ratio of 3:1 was found to be most suitable for the formulation of SNEDDS. A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was employed for studying the effect of volumes of oil and Smixon PS and PDI of globules formed from the SNEDDS. For this purpose, the Oil:Smix ratio of 1:4 was chosen for the central point in the design. The results of CCRD showed that a higher volume of oils results in a higher PS and PDI. Similarly, a higher volume of Smix resulted in a lower PS and PDI. The SNEDDS formulation for characterization was chosen based on the particle size (PS), polydispersity index (PDI), and thermodn. stability. The TEM images revealed uniformity in size and morphol. of the formed droplets. Meanwhile, the in vitro RESV release was rapid from RESV-SNEDDS. The cell viability studies, change in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), COX-2 and NF-kB levels, and the wound scratch method showed enhanced cytotoxicity of RESV-SNEDDS compared to RESV alone. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects around 3-4% of the population globally leading to skin inflammation. Tacrolimus is widely used in the treatment of psoriasis due to its ability to suppress inflammation and immune response. But formation of scaly plaques and dry patches are hurdle in delivering drug via topical route. The aim of present study was to develop, optimize and characterize tacrolimus loaded nanoemulsion gel to get enhanced anti-psoriatic activity. Nanoemulsion was prepared using spontaneous emulsification method combined with high pressure homogenization technique using fish oil and linseed oil (2 different oils), tween 80 (surfactant) and transcutol-P (co-surfactant). Fish oil and linseed oil were used as oil phase as they contain high amount of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, and possess anti-inflammatory activity. The optimized nanoemulsions (fish oil an linseed oil containing nanoemulsions) attained using central composite rotable design had desired average hydrodynamic diameter (<130 nm) and narrow PDI along with high percentage transmittance (>95%). The optimized nanoemulsion was transformed into nanoemulsion gel using 1% carbopol-934. The cumulative drug permeated through the skin was 1.3 and 1.4-fold higher for nanoemulsion gel-F and L resp. compared to marketed ointment. The confocal laser scanning microscopy and dermatokinetic studies confirmed enhanced depth of permeation and skin retention (∼1.5-folds) for developed nanoemulsion gel. In vivo study performed on mice using Imiquimod induced psoriasis-like inflammation model, showed significantly high anti-psoriatic activity in mice treated with nanoemulsion gels compared to marketed ointment. Significant reduction in the levels of cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) in the skin, showed promising outcome in the treatment of psoriasis, of developed nanoemulsion gels compared to marketed ointment. Thus, it was concluded that fish oil and linseed oil integrated tacrolimus nanoemulsion gel could improve the efficacy of tacrolimus and is a promising carrier in the treatment of psoriasis.

The present study aims are to develop general models based on Abraham solvation parameters and Hansen solubility parameters to predict mesalazine solubility in cosolvency systems at different temperatures The Jouyban-Acree model as an accurate math. model is combined with physicochem. parameters of the Abraham solvation parameters and the Hansen solubility parameters to achieve the predictive cosolvency models. KAT-LSER model was also applied for the representation of mesalazine solubility data at 298.2 K. The applicability of the proposed methods was evaluated by calculating the overall mean relative deviations (MRDs %) values of the solubility data for mesalazine in 11 cosolvency systems and discussed. Chem. penetration enhancers (CPEs) are commonly added into transdermal patches to impart improved skin permeation of drug. However, significant unexplained variability in drug release kinetics in transdermal patches is possible as a result of the addition of CPEs; investigations into the underlying mechanisms are still limited. In the present study, a diverse set of CPEs was employed to draw broad conclusions. Solubility parameters of CPEs and acrylate pressure-sensitive adhesive were calculated by mol. dynamics simulation and Fedors group contribution method to evaluate drug-adhesive miscibility. CPE-adhesive interaction was characterized by FT-IR study, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and mol. docking simulation. Results showed that release enhancement ratio (ERR) of CPEs for zolmitriptan was rank ordered as iso-Pr myristate > azone > Plurol Oleique CC497 > Span 80 > N-methylpyrrolidone > Transcutol P. It was found that solubility parameter difference (Δδ) between CPE and adhesive was neg. related with ERR. It was proved that hydrogen bonding between CPE and adhesive would increase drug release rate, but only if the CPE showed good miscibility with adhesive. CPE like iso-Pr myristate, which had good miscibility with adhesive, could decrease drug-adhesive interaction leading to the release of drug from adhesive.
