Lightweight, flexible and highly sensitive segregated microcellular nanocomposite piezoresistive sensors for human motion detection

Lightweight, flexible and highly sensitive piezoresistive sensors are promising for future generations of wearable electronics, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction and soft robotics. Herein, segregated micro-cellular nanocomposites based on the microcellular poly(ether-block-amide) beads coated with silver (microcellular Pebax@Ag beads) are fabricated by the scalable and feasible supercritical CO2 foaming combined with dip-coating and curing approach. The segregated microcellular nanocomposites show low mass density (0.6 g/cm(3)), good flexibility (60% compressibility) and high electrical conductivity (0.64 S/m) with ultralow percolation threshold (0.28 vol%) benefiting from the simultaneous incorporation of segregated structures and microcellular structures. The resultant segregated microcellular nanocomposite piezoresistive sensors exhibit superior piezoresistive performances including improved relative resistance changes and higher sensitivity upon the externally applied compression strains owing to the synergistic effect of multiple mechanisms: higher local effective MWCNT contents due to the excluded-volume effect, construction of more effective 3D MWCNT/Ag conductive networks and rapid response due to the highly-resilient microcellular Pebax beads. Direct conversion of ester bond-rich waste plastics into hard carbon for high-performance sodium storage

Disordered hard carbon (HC) has shown potential as the most promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBS). Pyrolyzing waste plastics is a sustainable alternative to obtain HC. However, most plastics will completely decompose without carbon residue or transform into highly graphitic carbon during the carbonation process because of lacking oxygen functional groups. Hence, ester bond-rich waste engineering plastics, polycarbonate (PC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were selected and directly converted into HC by a simple pyrolysis method. The PC and PET-derived carbon anodes (PC-HC and PET-HC) exhibit high reversible capacities of 327 and 342 mAh.g(-1) at 20 mA.g(-1) with remarkable initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 84.7% and 86.1%, respectively. Particularly, the carbon samples have no severe capacities decay after 140 cycles at 100 mA.g(-1). Rapid separation and purification of two C25 steroids with bicyclic [4.4.1] A/B rings from the marine fungus Aspergillus sp. LS116 by high-speed counter-current chromatography in stepwise elution mode

Size-control in the synthesis of oxo-bridged phosphazane macrocycles via a modular addition approach

Cyclodiphosphazane macrocycles have demonstrated promising host-guest chemistry, but synthetic routes to highorder versions are lacking. Here the authors synthesise high-order oxygen-bridged phosphazane macrocycles via a modular cyclisation strategy. Inorganic macrocycles remain largely underdeveloped compared with their organic counterparts due to the challenges involved in their synthesis. Among them, cyclodiphosphazane macrocycles have shown to be promising candidates for supramolecular chemistry applications due to their ability to encapsulate small molecules or ions within their cavities. However, further developments have been handicapped by the lack of synthetic routes to high-order cyclodiphosphazane macrocycles. Moreover, current approaches allow little control over the size of the macrocycles formed. Here we report the synthesis of high-order oxygen-bridged phosphazane macrocycles via a 3 + n cyclisation (n = 1 and 3). Using this method, an all-P-III high-order hexameric cyclodiphosphazane macrocycle was isolated, displaying a larger macrocyclic cavity than comparable organic crown-ethers. Our approach demonstrates that increasing building block complexity enables precise control over macrocycle size, which will not only generate future developments in both the phosphazane and main group chemistry but also in the fields of supramolecular chemistry.

Polythiourethanes Crosslinked with Dynamic Disulfide Bonds: Synthesis via Nonisocyanate Approach, Thermomechanical and Reprocessing Properties

Polythiourethanes (PTUs) crosslinked with dynamic disulfide bonds are synthesized via a nonisocyanate approach. First, a difunctional five-membered cyclic trithiocarbonate (1) is synthesized via the reaction of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with carbon disulfide (CS2). Thereafter, the step-growth polymerizations of 1 with alpha,omega-diamino poly(propylene oxide)s with various molar masses are carried out to obtain a series of linear poly(mercapto thiourethane)s. These linear poly(mercapto thiourethane)s are readily crosslinked upon formation of disulfide bonds, which are generated via radical coupling reaction with the side mercapto groups. These crosslinked PTUs can be tailored into the materials from thermosetting plastics to crosslinked elastomers, depending on the molar masses of alpha,omega-diamino poly(propylene oxide)s. Furfural biotransformation in Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 and Acinetobacter schindleri ACE

Objectives To determine furfural biotransformation capabilities of Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 and Acinetobacter schindleri ACE. Results Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 and A. schindleri ACE could not use furfural as sole carbon source but when acetate was used as substrate, ADP1 and ACE biotransformed 1 g furfural/l in 5 and 9 h, respectively. In both cases, the product of this biotransformation was difurfuryl-ether as shown by FT-IR and H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The presence of furfural decreased the specific growth rate in acetate by 27% in ADP1 and 53% in ACE. For both strains, the MIC of furfural was 1.25 g/l. Nonetheless, ADP1 biotransformed 2 g furfural/l at a rate of 1 g/l/h in the stationary phase of growth. A transcriptional analysis of possible dehydrogenases involved in this biotransformation, identified that the areB and frmA genes were highly overexpressed after the exposure of ADP1 to furfural. The products of these genes are a benzyl-alcohol dehydrogenase and an alcohol dehydrogenase. Conclusions Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 is a candidate for the biological detoxification of furfural, a fermentation inhibitor present in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, with the possible direct involvement of the AreB and FrmA enzymes in the process.

To a 250 ml., 3-neck, round-bottom flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a sparge tube were added 70 g of mixed diethylbenzenes obtained from the Aldrich Chemical Company, Milwaukee, Wis. After cooling the reaction mixture with an ice bath, hydrogen chloride gas was added for three minutes and thereupon 14.48 grams of aluminum chloride were slowly added. Hydrogen chloride gas was again added for three minutes. The reaction flask was then placed in a hot water bath to raise the temperature of the reaction mixture to 85-90 C. At this point ethylene gas was sparged into the reaction mixture until the level of tetraethylbenzene in the reaction mixture was maximized. The composition of the mixture was monitored by gas chromatography. After the ethylene addition was stopped, the reaction mixture was stirred for an additional 30 minutes at 90 C. To the above reaction mixture at 15 C. was added a mixture of 29.02 grams of 2-methoxynaphthalene dissolved in 50 ml of dichloromethane. The reaction mixture was permitted to warm to room temperature and after 900 minutes it was heated to 32 C. using a water bath. After 15 hours total reaction time the yield of 2-methoxy-6-ethylnaphthalene was 71.5% as measured by gas chromatography. This example shows the high yield of 2-methoxy-6-ethylnaphthalene that can be achieved by the method of this invention.
