Temporal trends in radiometrically dated sediment cores from English lakes show polybrominated diphenyl ethers correlate with brominated but not mixed bromo/chloro dioxins and furans

This paper reports concentrations between similar to 1950 and present, of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs), in radiometrically-dated sediment cores from three English lakes. Mixed bromo/chloro dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PXDD/Fs) were measured in two of the same lakes. Concentrations of PXDD/Fs decreased over time to the present. To our knowledge, this is the first report of temporal trends of PXDD/Fs in the environment. In contrast, concentrations of PBDEs increased towards the present and were significantly correlated (R = 0.88-0.98; p < 0.05) with concentrations of PBDFs in all three lakes. These observations suggest that the sources of PXDD/Fs are not related to PBDEs and differ from those of PBDFs. We also report for the first time the presence of octabromodibenzofuran (OBDF) in the two most recent core slices at one lake. The source of OBDF in these samples is unclear. While OBDF has been reported previously as a significant contaminant of some commercial formulations of Deca-BDE, it is also present in Octa-BDE products and in emissions from a variety of combustion activities. Overall, while the positive correlation between PBDEs and PBDFs suggests increased use of PBDEs has contributed substantially to environmental contamination with PBDFs; examination of PBDF homologue patterns implies emissions from combustion activities are likely also important. The significance of the interfacial interaction in mixed matrix membranes for enhanced propylene/propane separation performance and plasticization resistance

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are an attractive platform for challenging gas separations since they are the state-of-the-art scalable molecular sieve membranes. Here, the commercially attractive polysulfone (PSF) was grafted by poly(polyethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEG) side chains to improve the interfacial interaction with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles and the affinity towards C3H6 for enhanced C3H6/C3H8 separation performance. The PSFPEG graft copolymers monotonically increased the intersegmental distance of polymer chains with increasing the PEG contents based on the XRD results and the density functional theory calculations. Also, the cross-sectional SEM images of MMMs visualized that the interfacial adhesion between ZIF-8 and polymer was improved as the PEG content increased. Both DSC and FT-IR analyses revealed that such an enhanced interfacial adhesion was attributed to a combination of flexible nature of PEG side chains and various chemical interactions. More importantly, the PSFPEG73/ZIF-8 (65/35 vol/vol) MMM enhanced both C3H6 permeability and C3H6/C3H8 permselectivity compared to the PSF/ZIF-8 counterpart by 57% and 55%, respectively. Besides, the equimolar C3H6/C3H8 mixed gas permeation isotherm exhibited that the PSFPEG73/ZIF-8 (65/35 vol/vol) MMM enhanced the plasticization resistance against C3H6 compared to the PSF/ZIF-8 counterpart (e.g., C3H6-induced plasticization pressure of 5 vs. 3 atm), demonstrating the significance of the interfacial interaction.

Friction stir spot welding of 5052 aluminum alloy to carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone composites

The hybrid structure composed of aluminum alloy and carbon fiber reinforced plastics could combine their advantages. In order to investigate the weldability of these two lightweight materials, the hybrid joints of 5052 aluminum alloy (AA5052) and carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone composites (CF-PEEK) were fabricated by friction stir spot welding. The variance analysis revealed that the dwell time and plunge speed were the most significant factors. By optimizing the welding parameters, the ultimate tensile shear load reached 2690 +/- 64 N (the dwell time: 8 s, the plunge speed: 10 mm/min). The interface could be divided into pin-affected zone, shoulder-affected zone, resin adhesive zone and resin concentrated zone. Since resin concentrated zone could not provide interfacial bonding due to delamination, the shoulder-affected zone and pin-affected zone were decisive regions for mechanical properties. The bonding mechanism included three parts: adhesive bonding provided by re-solidified resin, macro-mechanical interlocking of aluminum alloy that entered CF-PEEK, and micro-mechanical interlocking of resin that was tightly trapped at surface slits as well as the carbon fibers beset into AA5052. This work clarifies the interfacial characteristics of AA5052/CF-PEEK hybrid joints and provides an approach to improve the mechanical properties. (c) 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd. Partitioning behavior of caffeine, lamotrigine, clonazepam and oxcarbazepine in a biodegradable aqueous two-phase system comprising of polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether 250 and choline chloride/saccharose deep eutectic solvent

Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) are well-known as novel, green, non-toxic and sensitive pharmaceutical pretreatment systems, where they are necessary for drug extraction from plasma, serum or urine samples. In the search for new ATPSs, especially those that exemplify the above-mentioned characteristics, here, a systematic investigation of biodegradable ATPS containing polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether 250 and one natural deep eutectic solvent obtained from mixtures of choline chloride as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and saccharose as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) with different molar ratio (i.e. 1:1, 2:1 and 4:1) was made by liquid-liquid equilibria and drug partitioning studies at T = (298.15, 308.15 and 318.15) K under atmospheric pressure (approximate to 85 kPa). The salting-out strength of the natural deep eutectic solvent calculated from fitting solubility data with the effective excluded volume theory was used to explore the influences of temperature and HBA:HBD molar ratio on the phase separation in this ATPS; the trend showed that the biphasic region was expanded by enhancing HBA:HBD molar ratio as well as increasing temperature. The performance of this ATPS for partitioning caffeine, lamotrigine, clonazepam and oxcarbazepine was evaluated by computing their partition coefficients and extraction efficiencies with focusing on the absence or presence of HBD, HBA:HBD molar ratio, temperature, drug nature and mass fractions of natural deep eutectic solvent. In all conditions, the high hydrophobic drugs could be partitioned effectively into the top phase with a single step extraction efficiency up to 90% indicating a preferential interaction between drug and polymer enriched in this phase. The influence of long carbon fiber and its orientation on the properties of three-dimensional needle-punched CF/PEEK composites

In this work, high performance composite materials with high mechanical strength and isotropic properties are expected to obtained. Long carbon fiber (40 mm) reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites were prepared by three-dimensional (3D) needle-punched method. Orthogonal test was used to optimize molding parameters of 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK (30/70) composites. The influence of carbon fiber content and its orientation on the mechanical properties, thermal properties, crystallization properties and microstructure of the composites were studied in the range of 30-60 wt %. The excellent mechanical properties were shown with the increase of fiber content, and the composites were approximately isotropic in-plane due to the random fiber orientation. With the increase of carbon fiber content, the melting point measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and 5% weight loss temperature tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the composites increased slightly, however the heat deflection temperature (HDT) increased obviously. SEM observation showed that compared with traditional thermoplastic plate, 3D needle-punched CF/PEEK composites could provide multi-direction impregnation channel for PEEK melt resin to realize multi-point impregnation, as a result, carbon fiber had a better impregnation effect in PEEK resin matrix. It was found that the tensile modulus and flexural modulus of CF/PEEK were very close to those of human cortical bone. It would reduce the stress shielding effect and has great application value if it is applied to the orthopaedic bone plate.

Dioxins in breast milk of Chinese mothers: A survey 40 years after the e-waste recycling activities

In the past two decades, numerous studies on dioxin concentrations in breast milk have been conducted in China. However, information concerning dioxin concentrations in breast milk from women living in e-waste recycling sites remains limited. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate health risk owing dioxin intake in e-waste recycling areas in China. In 2015, 42 mothers were recruited from an e-waste recycling site, and the same number of mothers were recruited from a reference site. We collected 10-mL breast milk samples from each participant. Breast milk concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs)/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were significantly higher in the exposed group than in the reference group. The total toxic equivalents (TEQ) of PCDDs/DFs were 9.68 pg/g lipid in the exposed group, a value two times higher than those in the reference group (4.18 pg/g lipid). The estimated daily intake (EDI) of PCDD/DFs was calculated to assess the risk of dioxins through breastfeeding. The infant EDI level was two times higher in the exposed group (54.21 pg TEQ/kg body wt/day) than in the reference group (23.41 pg TEQ/kg body wt/day). Our findings suggest that mothers and their breastfeeding infants living in an e-waste recycling site were exposed to higher dioxin concentrations than those living in a reference site. Effects of Different Parts on the Chemical Composition, Silage Fermentation Profile, In Vitro and In Situ Digestibility of Paper Mulberry

Simple Summary Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera, PM) is a potential roughage source widely distributed in Asia, but the chemical composition, silage fermentation, and digestibility are not fully understood. Here, we compared the chemical composition, silage fermentation, and digestibility of leaf, stem, and whole plant of PM to evaluate its feeding value. The result showed that the leaf had lower fiber content and higher protein content than the stem and whole plant. Meanwhile, the stem silage had the lowest pH value and lactate content, while those in the leaf were the highest. The in vitro and in situ digestibility showed the leaf was more digestible. Our study gives the reference of different parts of PM to be used as a feedstuff. Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera, PM) is high protein but unutilized as a feed source. The study explores the different parts (leaf, stem, and whole plant) of PM chemical composition, silage fermentation, and in vitro and in situ digestibility, aiming to give some guidelines to PM usage as feed. The result showed that the leaf had a higher fresh weight than the stem (p < 0.05). The dry matter contents of the three groups had no differences. The highest crude protein, ether extract, water-soluble carbohydrate, ash, calcium, phosphorus, amino acid contents, and butter capacity were observed in the leaf (p < 0.05). The stem had the highest (p < 0.05) neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and lignin contents. After ensiling, the stem silage had the lowest pH value, ammonia nitrate (NH3-N), lactate, acetate, and propionate (p < 0.05). The leaf silage had the highest pH value (p < 0.05). The lactate, acetate, and propionate in the leaf and whole plant silage had no difference. The butyrate was not detected in all silage. The in vitro and in situ digestibility experiments showed the leaf had the highest digestibility (p < 0.05), which could produce more volatile fatty acids and have a higher effective digestibility. Performance enhancement of gel polymer electrolytes using sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) for supercapacitors

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with reasonable mechanical properties are highly favorable for flexible/stretchable solid-state supercapacitors. However, the widely explored poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-based GPEs provide unsatisfactory mechanical performance. Herein, a useful strategy is adopted to improve the performance of PAA-based GPEs by incorporating sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) chains. The optimum SPEEK-enhanced PAA GPE shows an ionic conductivity of 100 +/- 1.57 mS cm(-1), ultimate tensile strength of 4.2 +/- 0.24 kPa and elongation at break of 858%, which are larger than those of the plain PAA GPE. A supercapacitor developed using such a SPEEK-enhanced GPE also delivers higher specific capacitance, larger energy density and comparable cycling stability compared to a supercapacitor using a PAA GPE. This work suggests that rigid ionic polymers are suitable for improving the performance of GPEs with inferior mechanical properties. (c) 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Catalytic Conversion of Pyrolysis Oil to Alcohols and Alkanes in Supercritical Methanol over the CuMgAlOx Catalyst

Pyrolysis oil (PO) is an inexpensive biofuel produced via the fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass. However, PO is unstable and has low energy density, making it unsuitable as a fuel in conventional engines without upgrading. Supercritical methanol depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation were used to convert PO to a mixture of alkanes and alcohols in a continuous packed-bed reaction using the CuMgAlOx catalyst. The PO was pretreated at low temperature to convert acids, aldehydes, and ketones. The pretreated PO was converted continuously for 11 h until the packed bed plugged from coke formation. The catalyst deactivated over time from the deposition of high molecular weight pyrolytic lignin (PL) species. Oxygenates and anhydrosugars in the sugar-rich aqueous fraction of PO were converted to C-2-C-6 alcohols, esters, and ethers through a mixed hydrodeoxygenation and Guerbet coupling reaction pathway. PL was converted to a mixture of oxygenated aromatics including naphthenes and cyclohexanols.

A review of electrically conductive poly(ether ether ketone) materials

Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a high-performance thermoplastic with a distinctive combination of corrosion resistance, thermo-oxidative stability and outstanding physical and mechanical properties at high temperatures. A pertinent step forward in the development of this thermoplastic has been the inclusion of electrically conductive fillers to expand its functionality. In this review an overview of the research on electrically conductive PEEK composites is provided. Conductive filler type, fabrication methods, characterization details and different properties are described. Carbon nanotubes, graphene nanoplatelets and other organic and inorganic conductive fillers such as expanded graphite and nickel have been incorporated into PEEK by techniques such as extrusion, injection moulding and cold and hot compression moulding and in some cases with pre-processing steps including mechanochemical modifications in organic solvents. The influences of type, loading and compatibilization of fillers and processing conditions on the mechanical and electrical conductivity properties of the composites are analysed and compared. The incorporated fillers have been able to enhance the electrical conductivity of the PEEK composites to either the semiconducting or conductive regions. PEEK composites containing carbon nanotubes compatibilized by polysulfones and poly(ether imide) achieved electrical conductivity values in the semiconducting region at the lowest electrical percolation threshold of 0.1 wt%. Additionally, the inclusion of 10 wt% expanded graphite and 10 vol% inorganic macroparticles of nickel noticeably improved the electrical conductivity of PEEK into the conductive region.
