Gulls foraging in landfills: Does atmospheric exposure to halogenated flame retardants result in bioaccumulation?

Several bird species have adapted to foraging in landfills, although these sites are known to represent significant sources of emissions of toxic semi-volatile chemicals including the halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) (e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and emerging compounds). The objective of this study was to investigate the association between atmospheric exposure to PBDEs and selected emerging HFRs and their bioaccumulation in landfill-foraging birds. We determined HFR concentrations in liver of 58 GPS-tagged ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) breeding in a colony near Montreal (Canada) as well as their atmospheric exposure determined using a miniature bird-borne passive air sampler. PBDE mixtures were the most abundant HFRs determined in passive air samplers (daily exposure rates of Sigma(9)PentaBDE: 47.4 +/- 6.5 pg/day; DecaBDE: 36.0 +/- 6.3 pg/day, and Sigma(3)OctaBDE: 3.4 +/- 0.5 pg/day) and liver (Sigma(9)PentaBDE: 68.1 +/- 8.9 ng/g ww; DecaBDE: 52.3 +/- 8.1 ng/g ww, and Sigma(3)OctaBDE: 12.8 +/- 2.1 ng/g ww), and their concentrations increased with the presence probability of gulls in landfills. We found a spatial relationship between the local sources of atmospheric exposure to PBDEs and the sites associated with greatest PBDE concentrations in liver. Diphenylamine Antioxidants in wastewater influent, effluent, biosolids and landfill leachate: Contribution to environmental releases

Diphenylamine antioxidants (DPAs) are widely used industrial chemicals. Wastewater effluents and biosolids are important pathways for DPAs to enter the environment. Information on the fate of DPAs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their environmental releases is limited. In this study, we characterized the occurrence, removal efficiencies, distribution, mass balance, and environmental releases of 17 DPAs in ten Canadian WWTPs and four landfill sites from 2013 to 2015. These WWTPs are different in sizes, and treatment technologies. Median concentrations of Sigma DPAs were 78 ng/L in influent, 6.9 ng/L in effluent, 326 ng/L in leachate, and 445 ng/g in biosolids (dry weight), respectively. Diphenylamine (DPA) and ditertoctyl-diphenylamine (DTO-DPA) were the predominant congeners of DPAs in all the matrices. Residues of DPAs were not completely removed during wastewater treatment processes: most DPAs were detected in at least one sample of WWTP effluent with the highest concentration of 117 ng/L (DPA). Overall, high removal efficiencies (median > 90%) of most of the DPAs were observed in the secondary and advanced treatment, as well as in the facultative and aerated lagoons. In contrast, primary treatment exhibited a lower removal efficiency of the DPAs. Mass balance analysis shows that sorption to biosolids is the major removal pathway of DPAs in WWTPs. The results also highlight that environmental releases of DPAs via biosolid applications (70 mg/d/1000 people) can be over several times higher than that via wastewater effluent (2.5-36 mg/d/1000 people). Improved antifouling performance of a polyamide composite reverse osmosis membrane by surface grafting of dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DACMC)

Antifouling properties are considered to be essential to polyamide (PA) composite reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for their industrial applications. In this work, an antifouling material, dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DACMC), was prepared by the oxidation of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and then grafted onto the surface of a nascent PA RO membrane to improve its antifouling properties. The results showed that DACMC grafting could endow the membrane with improved hydrophilicity, surface smoothness and NaCl retention, while the permeability was decreased slightly after DACMC grafting. The zeta potentials of the membrane could be adjusted by changing the DACMC concentration. In addition, three typical surfactants with various charge properties, including sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), polyoxyethylene octylphenol ether (OP-10) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were used as feed foulants to evaluate the antifouling property of membranes. The results showed that, for the anionic SDS and nonionic OP-10 surfactants, the modified membranes with more DACMC had better antifouling performance because the membrane hydrophilicity dominated the interaction between foulants and the membrane surface. For the cationic CTAB, however, the pristine membrane showed better antifouling performance than the modified membrane with low DACMC grafting concentrations (5 and 10 g/L). This difference was attributed to the stronger electrostatic adsorption between the cationic CTAB and the modified membranes with more negative charges. The modified membrane with high DACMC grafting concentrations (20 g/L) exhibited the best antifouling performance for all the surfactants thanks to its high hydrophilicity and low negative charge. Therefore, the charge and hydrophilic properties of the RO membrane must be designed rationally to enhance the antifouling performance of the RO membrane when treating surfactant-containing wastewater.

Characterization of adipogenic, PPAR gamma, and TR beta activities in house dust extracts and their associations with organic contaminants

In this study, we sought to expand our previous research on associations between bioactivities in dust and associated organic contaminants. Dust samples were collected from central NC homes (n = 188), solvent extracted, and split into two fractions, one for analysis using three different bioassays (nuclear receptor activation/inhibition and adipocyte development) and one for mass spectrometry (targeted measurement of 124 organic contaminants, including flame retardants, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkyl substances, pesticides, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Approximately 80% of dust extracts exhibited significant adipogenic activity at concentrations that are comparable to estimated exposure for children and adults (e.g. similar to 20 mu g/well dust) via either triglyceride accumulation (65%) and/or pre-adipocyte proliferation (50%). Approximately 76% of samples antagonized thyroid receptor beta (TR beta), and 21% activated peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPAR.). Triglyceride accumulation was significantly correlated with TR beta antagonism. Sixty-five contaminants were detected in at least 75% of samples; of these, 26 were correlated with adipogenic activity and ten with TR beta antagonism. Regression models were used to evaluate associations of individual contaminants with adipogenic and TR beta bioactivities, and many individual contaminants were significantly associated. An exploratory g-computation model was used to evaluate the effect of mixtures. Contaminant mixtures were positively associated with triglyceride accumulation, and the magnitude of effect was larger than for any individually measured chemical. For each quartile increase in mixture exposure, triglyceride accumulation increased by 212% (RR = 3.12 and 95% confidence interval: 1.58, 6.17). These results suggest that complex mixtures of chemicals present in house dust may induce adipogenic activity in vitro at environmental concentrations and warrants further research. Vegetable fixed oils obtained from soursop agro-industrial waste: Extraction, characterization and preliminary evaluation of the functionality as pharmaceutical ingredients

This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of using oils extracted from seeds of soursop industrial waste for use as pharmaceutical ingredients. For that, soursop seeds were subjected to different processes of extraction of fixed oil, by chemical and mechanical routes. After characterization of fixed oils, the feasibility of using them as pharmaceutical excipients was explored by preparing creams in which the oils were used as emollient and/or antioxidant excipient. The oil extracted from soursop seeds in a Soxhlet device and ethyl ether solvent (SFO) showed a yield of 30.72 +/- 0.09 % (w w(-1)) and, in a domestic extruder (MFO), 23.86 +/- 0.78 % (w w(-1)). These oils showed physicochemical attributes that indicative of good preservation. The major fatty acid was the oleic acid, with 42.94-43.73 % in relative area, followed by linoleic with 29.5%-30% in relative area. In the non-grease fraction, the SFO showed considerable levels of phenolics (194.5 +/- 31.1 mg kg(-1)) and tocopherols (608.2 +/- 36.7 mg kg(-1)), which gave it an antioxidant potential, confirmed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl test, with a concentration effective for 50% inhibition (IC50) of 2.8 mg mL(-1). Finally, the evaluation of the quality parameters of the creams, suggests that the use of fixed soursop oils to replace the synthetic ingredients usually incorporated (decyl oleate, liquid petrolatum and butylhydroxytoluene), originated formulations with adequate physical and chemical stability. These findings suggest that both oils obtained are possible candidates for use as emollients and antioxidant in pharmaceutical formulas.
