The anionic surfactant SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate) is an emerging contaminant, being the main component of foaming agents that are increasingly used by the tunnel construction industry. To fill the gap of knowledge about the potential SLES toxicity on plants, acute and chronic effects were assessed under controlled conditions. The acute ecotoxicological test was performed on Lepidum sativum L. (cress) and Zea mays L. (maize). Germination of both species was not affected by SLES in soil, even at concentrations (1200 mg kg(-1)) more than twice higher than the maximum realistic values found in contaminated debris, thus confirming the low acute SLES toxicity on terrestrial plants. The root elongation of the more sensitive species (cress) was instead reduced at the highest SLES concentration. In the chronic phytotoxicity experiment, photosynthesis of maize was downregulated, and the photosynthetic performance (PITOT) significantly reduced already under realistic exposures (360 mg kg(-1)), owing to the SLES ability to interfere with water and/or nutrients uptake by roots. However, such reduction was transient, likely due to the rapid biodegradation of the surfactant by the soil microbial community. Indeed, SLES amount decreased in soil more than 90% of the initial concentration in only 11 days. A significant reduction of the maximum photosynthetic capacity (Pn(max)) was still evident at the end of the experiment, suggesting the persistence of negative SLES effects on plant growth and productivity. Overall results, although confirming the low phytotoxicity and high biodegradability of SLES in natural soils, highlight the importance of considering both acute and nonlethal stress effects to evaluate the environmental compatibility of soil containing SLES residues.

Effects of polycarboxylate ether grafted silica fume on flowability, rheological behavior and mechanical properties of cement-silica fume paste with low water-binder ratio

The results indicated that VPCE-SF and KPCE-SF were both displayed more effective dispersibility than comb-like PCE in cement-SF paste. Rheological analysis showed that the yield stress and viscosity of cement-SF paste with KPCE-SF were lower than that of VPCE-SF. It is due to the adsorption ability of KPCE-SF on cement and SF particles were stronger than VPCE-SF. The flexural and compressive strength of cement-SF paste with KPCE-SF were lower than that of VPCE-SF at 3 d, since cement-SF paste with KPCE-SF represented stronger retardation effect on hydration than VPCE-SF. Refining and Dewaxing of Light Lubricating Oil Using Ethoxylated Anionic Surfactant as Additive for Extraction

Production of light lubricating oil by furfural extraction using surfactant as an additive followed by dewaxing with urea was investigated in the present study. An investigation was conducted in order to examine the effect of the addition of ethoxylated anionic surfactant (SLES-sodium lauryl ether sulfate) to the fraction of the light lubricating (spindle) oil during the solvent extraction process. The aromatics in the lube oil were extracted at different temperatures ranging from 60 to 70 degrees C with different concentrations of surfactant (from 0.01 to 0.1 wt %). The operating conditions of the urea adduct formation with n-paraffins were studied in detail. The activator and the solvent used in dewaxing are acetone and gasoline, respectively. Pour point, viscosity index and yield of oil produced by different steps were determined to show the effect of the operating conditions. For an extraction carried out at the temperature of 70 degrees C, the quality of the raffinate was obtained with an increase in the yield for 13.41 wt %, by using a concentration of 0.1 wt % in SLES. According to the experimental results obtained from dewaxing with the increase in the quantity of urea, the yield of dewaxed products decreases and the yield of normal paraffins increases. Urea dewaxing has a greater effect on the pour point of lower viscosity cuts, as adduct formation is selective for n-paraffins.

Separation and quantification of lupeol in Hygrophila schulli by high-performance thin-layer chromatography

Lupeol is the main active constituent of Hygrophila schulli (HS) plant. A simple, reliable and reproducible method of quantification is needed for the quality control of HS. Therefore, high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method was established for determining lupeol in HS roots and aerial parts. The laboratory isolated and identified (by UV, FT-IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR and MS) lupeol from HS roots was used to develop the proposed method. The method was validated in terms of linearity, limits of detection and quantification, stability, precision, accuracy and robustness studies. Aluminum-backed HPTLC plates precoated with silica gel 60F(254) were used as the stationary phase and benzene-chloroform-methanol (93:5.75:1.25, V/V) as the optimized mobile phase. Post-chromatographic derivatization was done with anisaldehye-H2SO4 reagent, and the chromatograms were scanned using CAMAG TLC Scanner III at 540 nm. The linear regression analysis data for the calibration plots of lupeol showed good linearity relationship with y = 7.1841x + 751.42 (r(2) = 0.9979) regression equation in the concentration range of 200-1000 ng band(-1) (R-F = 0.43 +/- 0.02). Mean +/- SD values of slope and intercept were 7.1840 +/- 0.067 and 751.42 +/- 45.50, respectively. Inadvertent release of radioactive Cs+ to the environment poses a grave threat as it may cause severe health problems to the exposed population. One of the practical solutions is to use effective regenerable Cs+ adsorbents to minimize total waste volume. In this study, a mesoporous adsorbent for Cs+ capture was prepared by tethering a Cs+-selective ligand monoamino-dibenzo-18-crown-6 (MA-DB18C6) ether on chloro-functionalized SBA-15 (Cl-SBA) support. The dispersible adsorbent (DB18C6-SBA) registered a maximum adsorption capacity of 94.54 mg g(-1) from non-linear Hill isotherm fitting. The model suggests near Langmuir-type of Cs+ capture as Hill coefficient n(H)-> 1. This indicates nearly independent monolayer Cs+ binding with the tethered DB18C6 with no adsorbate interaction. Kinetic study reveals a pseudo-second order of Cs+ uptake rate while thermodynamic analyses show the spontaneity and endothermicity of the process. Compared with conventional ligand impregnation technique, covalently tethered DB18C6 occupy smaller surface space of SBA-15 resulting in higher ligand loading and higher adsorption capacity. DB18C6-SBA is regenerable in mild acid and exhibits consistent adsorption capacity after several reuse cycles. It can selectively capture Cs+ from simulated high level liquid waste, but more effectively from Cs+-contaminated surface water with K-D similar to 1578 mL g(-1) and concentration factor CF similar to 2267 in the presence of Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+. Cycled batch adsorption shows that DB18C6-SBA can be reused with consistent uptake performance while lab-scale sequential adsorption-nanofiltration system with Cs+ stripping further demonstrates its potential long-term use as Cs+ adsorbent for the treatment of contaminated water.
