Purification by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane/ether 100:1 to 98:2) gave 12 (pale yellow oil, 3.77 g, 15.2 mmol, 65% for two steps). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) delta 7.60 (d, 1H, J=7.9 Hz), 6.63 (d, 1H, J=1.2 Hz), 6.53 (dd, 1H, J=7.9, 1.2 Hz), 3.84 (s, 3H), 2.31 (s, 3H); 13C NMR (125 MHz, CDCl3) delta 157.84, 139.86, 138.96, 123.36, 112.07, 81.78, 56.18, 21.42; HRMS (FAB+) m/z 248.9780 [(M+H)+: calcd for C8H10OI, 248.9776].
