A variety of substituted arylglyoxylic acids (2a-g) were synthesized via oxidation of the corresponding aryl Me ketones (1a-e) using selenium dioxide or Friedel-Crafts acylation of phenol (3) with Et chlorooxoacetate and further transformations.
