An efficient methodol. for the synthesis of a variety of indolizines from quinazolinone, pyridine, and chalcone via I2/FeCl3 has been described. The reaction was promoted through zwitterion formation/cyclization/aromatization sequence, affording the desired products in moderate to very good yields. This approach is a highly efficient and convenient way to get derivatives of indolizines from readily accessible substrate under relatively mild reaction conditions.
