Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) were measured in eleven mollusk species collected from the Chinese Bohai Sea. PBDEs and AHFRs were detected in all species, and their average total concentrations were in the range of 22.5-355 and 10.0-84.3 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) were the dominant halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), contributing 22.5% to 73.6% and 3.1% to 38.3% of the total HFRs, respectively. The levels of PBDEs and AHFRs were moderate to high from a global perspective. Interspecific differences in the accumulation of PBDEs and AHFRs were characterized by heat map and cluster analysis. Composition profile differences were also observed, with higher proportions of AHFRs in gastropods than in bivalves. These species-specific differences in concentrations and profiles in mollusks were attributed to different species traits, including feeding habit, trophic level, and metabolic potential.

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on electrocatalysts represents a major obstacle in the development of fuel cell technology. A tremendous amount of work has reported the increasing ORR activity for catalysts. Nevertheless, when applied to practical Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA, an assembled stack of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell) configuration, the high-performance catalysts on the rotating disk electrode (RDE) may not display the same high activity as in the lab-scale tests. This led us to reexamine the ORR evaluation based on the RDE technique. With the development of high active electrocatalysts, it may become significant to determine the reasonable kinetic current at a conventional fixed potential approaching the limited current by using the Koutecky-Levich (K-L) technique on RDE for the evaluation of ORR activity. Here we describe such a challenging situation and systematically discuss the proper kinetic region when comparing the ORR activity with the unsuitable potential or Pt loading based on the K-L technique. Furthermore, the rational benchmarking guidelines are given for the evaluation of the ORR electrocatalysts.

High-performance polymer semiconductors generally should have wide absorption, good solution processability, and fine-tuned physicochemical properties in order to achieve satisfying photovoltaic performance. Herein, two new alkynyl-functionalized electron donor units, 3-alkyl-3′-alkynyl-2,2′-bithiophene (TRTRy) and 3-alkoxy-3′-alkynyl-2,2′-bithiophene (TORTRy), were invented through the combination of the alkynyl side chain with the alkyl or alkoxy side chain, respectively. Copolymerization of these bithiophenes with difluorobenzothiadiazole (ffBT) afforded polymers ffBT-TRTRy and ffBT-TORTRy, respectively. When applied into polymer solar cells (PSCs), devices using ffBT-TRTRy donor polymer display a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.34% with a short-circuit current (J(sc)) of 7.46 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.93 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 34.0%. The TORTRy containing polymer ffBT-TORTRy affords PSCs with a much improved PCE of 6.60% with a higher J(sc) of 15.09 mA cm(-2), a larger FF of 58.3%, and a V-oc of 0.75 V. The performance improvement of PSC devices using ffBT-TORTRy donor is mainly attributed to the simultaneous realization of higher J(sc) and FF, while maintaining a good V-oc. The results demonstrate that alkynyl-functionalized H-H bithiophenes are promising building blocks for efficient PSCs.

Synthesis of size-controlled anisotropic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles allows designing next-generation magnetic nanosystems with predetermined magnetic properties suited for particular applications in the biomedical, information, and environment fields. In this work, we report a reproducible and economical approach for fabricating anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles via the thermal decomposition method. Controlling the reaction environment, i.e. the degassing pressure, is essential to obtain the reproducible synthesis of anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles along with monodispersity in the size and shape. At low degassing pressure, Fe3O4 nanocubes are formed, and an increase in degassing pressure leads to the formation of Fe3O4 octahedral nanoparticles. To achieve good reproducibility (with respect to size and shape) between different batches, our finding reveals the importance of maintaing the same degassing pressure. The size of the anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be varied by changing the heating rate and the solvent amount. The amount of solvent has also an influence on the shape of the nanoparticles, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles of flower morphology are obtained at a high solvent amount. The work also provides new conceptual fundamental insights into understanding the growth mechanism of anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and thus advancing the field of materials chemistry for rationally designing anisotropic nanoparticles with tunable magnetic properties.

Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in surface sediment from five estuaries of central coasts of Vietnam to understand the spatial distributions and seasonal variations. The contamination pattern was in the order: PCBs (9.72-3730 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > PBDEs (11.8-311 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > DDTs (0.462-26.7 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > HCHs (0.491-22.6 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > endosulfan compounds (0.196-19.4 ng g(-1) dry wt.). DDTs and HCHs showed a little geographical variation, whereas PCBs and PBDEs exhibited clearer spatial distribution trend. Elevated concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were detected in some sites in Nghe An and Quang Birth Province, which could be related to the human activities such as tourism, transportation, and domestic consumption. Seasonal variations of DDTs and HCHs were observed, showing higher residues in rainy seasons.

Quantum dots (QDs) were suggested a decade ago as a means of spectral decoy to divert rocket attacks from flying objects such as satellites but have not yet found industrial applications. A possible reason is that these advanced nanomaterials are unstable in the long-term under the forces exhibited on a flying object and the nanoparticles might agglomerate to form larger microparticles, which have a different, unwanted spectral footprint. This work proposes an on-board (in situ) real-time synthesis of quantum dots on a satellite as a result of an interdisciplinary innovation that combines nanomaterial chemistry, heating and mixing with batch microfluidics, and microfabrication of a miniaturized chip. We employed a microchip as the in situ reaction chamber due to its capability of fast, compact synthesis. The implementation of the space micro-reactor, on the other hand, leads to other fundamental challenges that need to be solved such as robust pump-free fluid motion and quick synthesis of quantum dots in less than 180 s which is equivalent to the typical time a rocket needs to reach the satellite from the ground. Additionally, quantum dots need to be tailored in the type of material and size to replicate the spectral signal of the to-beprotected space asset while the synthesis process needs to be robust and resilient to work reliably and automatically under the demanding conditions of a flying object. In this study, we selected cadmium selenide (CdSe) and lead selenide (PbSe) as the materials of choice. Our synthesis process aims to simplify and tailor CdSe and PbSe quantum dots to match the above demands. The produced quantum dots were characterized by their wavelength emission spectra and high-angle annular dark-held scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF STEM) images. Results show that both CdSe and PbSe quantum dots have been successfully synthesized within a maximum of 10 minutes. While the chosen CdSe-based synthesis was unable to reach IR-emitting sizes within several minutes, we managed to meet all other research targets. The synthesized PbSe 013s were able to reach the mock-spectrum and could produce an emission wavelength peak from 1200 to 1400 nm. This work finally provides insights into the limits of batch synthesis in a microfabricated nanodot chip, such as the need to improve reproducibility and enhance particle growth. Based on this learning, we propose a self-priming flow microchip synthesis that can capitalize on mixing as a key asset to overcome those limits.
