In-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry is a powerful tool to understand the structures and reaction mechanisms of electrochemical interfaces yet usually suffers from a low sensitivity and detection efficiency. Herein, we develop a windowless thin layer electrochemical cell design to improve the detection efficiency of in-situ Raman spectroscopy for practical nanoscale electrocatalysts. This was achieved by perforating a hole in the optical window of the cell, which not only eliminates the refraction of light by the window but also induces a meniscus thin electrolyte layer on the working electrode, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency of Raman spectra. We successfully applied thismethod to conduct in-situ Raman spectroscopy of structural evolutions of two representative Ni-Fe oxide catalysts (layered double hydroxides and spinel oxides) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. It was shown that both catalysts underwent surface transformation to oxyhydroxides and formed active oxygen species at OER relevant potentials. However, the extent of the surface transformation was much lower on the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst, accounting for its lower OER activity. We further show that adding a carbon support can promote the surface transformation of Ni-Fe spinel to oxyhydroxides, thus significantly increasing the electrocatalytic activities. The established windowless thin layer method provides a new way to conduct in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy of a wide range of materials and may be also combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods.

Ammonia (NH3) electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) is an important reaction in direct NH3 fuel cells, NH3 electrolyzer, and NH3-based electrochemical sensors. However, its slow kinetics and structure-sensitive properties require specific electrocatalyst designs. In this study, Ir-decorated N nanocubes are developed as unique surface engineered model catalysts. For the first time, we find that a trace amount of Ir (less than 2%) could increase the AOR activity of N nanocubes by more than twice. Theoretical simulation results also illustrate that the surfacedecorated Ir could lower the energy barrier in the rate determining *NH formation step on N surfaces, thus increasing activity in accordance with experimental findings. Additionally, Ir and Ni(OH)(2)-decorated N nanocubes can significantly improve the durability. Our findings demonstrate the importance of surface engineering in catalyst synthesis and pave the way of advanced electrocatalyst designs for ammonia oxidation and other catalytic reactions.

Investigating environmental pollution is important to understand its impact on endangered species such as green turtles (Chelonia mydas). In this study, we investigated the accumulation and potential toxicity of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and naturally occurring MeO-PBDEs in liver, fat, kidney and muscle of turtles (n = 30) of different gender, size, year of death, location and health status. Overall, POP concentrations were low and accumulation was highest in liver and lowest in fat which is likely due to the poor health of several animals, causing a remobilization of lipids and associated compounds. PCBs and p,p’-DDE dominated the POP profiles, and relatively high MeO-PBDE concentrations (2′-MeO-BDE 68 up to 192 ng/g lw, 6-MeO-BDE 47 up to 79 ng/g lw) were detected in all tissues. Only few influences of factors such as age, gender and location were found. While concentrations were low compared to other marine wildlife, biological toxicity equivalences obtained by screening the tissue extracts using the micro-EROD assay ranged from 2.8 to 356 pg/g and the highest values were observed in muscle, followed by kidney and liver. This emphazises that pollutant mixtures found in the turtles have the potential to cause dioxin-like effects in these animals and that dioxin-like compounds should not be overlooked in future studies. Bimetallic Pt-based catalysts have been extensively investigated to enhance the performance of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) because CO, a by-product, reduces the activity of the pure Pt catalysts. Herein, we synthesized Pt-Pb hexagonal nanoplates as a model catalyst for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and further controlled the Pt and Pb distributions on the surface of the nanoplates through acetic acid (HAc) treatment. As a result, we obtained Pt-Pb nanoplates and HAc-treated Pt-Pb nanoplates with homogeneous and heterogeneous distributions of the Pt-Pb alloy surfaces, respectively. We showed that the MOR activity and stability of the Pt-Pb nanoplates improved compared to those of the HAc-treated Pt-Pb nanoplates, mainly due to the enhanced CO tolerance and the modified electronic structure of Pt under the influence of the oxophilic Pb. Short-chain oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEs) (molecular formula: H3CO-(CH2O)(n)-CH3, where n = 3-5) have previously been studied as diesel-like fuels and fuel additives. OMEs can be produced from sustainably sourced methanol, and tests indicate that they are neither genotoxic nor mutagenic. In this report, their potential as solvents has been investigated to expand the bio-derived solvent space. According to traditional solvatochromic parameters, a commercial mixture of OME3-5 and its individual components (OME3, OME4, and OME5) have solvation properties similar to problematic industrial ether solvents such as 1,4-dioxane. Peroxide formation, one of the chief dangers of classical ether solvents, was found to occur much more slowly in OMEs than in conventional solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THE), demonstrating an improved safety profile. The commercial OME3-5 mixture was found to be broadly miscible with organic solvents but immiscible with water, suggesting potential application in aqueous extractions. It performed well in the dissolution of polystyrene and removal of paints and coatings, indicating OME3-5 may suitable to replace dichloromethane in polymer recycling, polymer welding, and cleaning applications. To further demonstrate applicability as a solvent, this mixture was shown to facilitate a model Suzuki coupling reaction at rates similar to cyclopentyl methyl ether, which is currently marketed as a green ether. Finally, OME3-5 proved a suitable solvent for enzymatic polymerization, giving high yields, moderately high degrees of polymerization, and remarkably narrow dispersity values.

Despite the introduction of restrictive regulations in the USA and the European Union, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are still found in various types of environmental and biological samples at significant concentration levels. The presence of these persistent organic pollutants in the environment raises important issues because of their negative impact on immunological and neurological systems, and on the hormonal balances in living organisms. From the analytical point of view, the final determination of PBDEs would entail substantial challenges, because it would necessitate conducting the pre-concentration of analytes, or sample clean up. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the analytical application potential of developed dummy molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction sorbents for the selective recognition of low-mass PBDEs. The 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenyl ether was employed as a dummy template of low-mass PBDEs. The developed types of the sorption materials were used in the sample preparation stage of the analytical procedure to determine the PBDE-47 and PBDE-99 levels in selected representatives of environmental samples reference materials of soil and bottom sediments. The recovery values of PBDE-47 and PBDE-99 from the studied solid samples ranged from 60% to 87%, depending on the applied DMIPs type.

Here, we have successfully synthesised and purified multifunctional PLGA-based nanoparticles by the co-encapsulation of an anticancer drug (tetrandrine) and a magnetic material (Fe3O4). The obtained Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs had a uniform spherical shape with a particle size of approximately 199nm and a negative surface charge of -18.0mV, displaying a high encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, TEM studies provided representative images of the purification process of the magnetic nanoparticles with MACS((R)) technology. The MFM and VSM results indicated that both the Fe3O4 NPs and Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs were superparamagnetic. The DSC spectrum demonstrated that Tet was successfully encapsulated within the PLGA-based nanoparticles. Significantly, the release studies revealed NPs had a relatively slower release rate than free Tet after 8h’s initial burst release, which had decreased from 98% to 65% after 24h. In vitro cellular studies revealed that NPs could effectively penetrate into A549 cells and A549 multicellular spheroids to exert cytotoxicity, displaying a significantly high anti-proliferation effect. Moreover, western blot demonstrated that the co-loaded NPs had a higher anticancer activity by injuring lysosomes to activate the mitochondria pathway and induce A549 cell apoptosis. The magnetic characteristics and high anticancer activity support the use of Tet/Fe3O4 co-loaded PLGA-based nanoparticles as a promising strategy in the treatment of lung cancer.

Thermal release of guest molecules from poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films, exhibiting host-guest cocrystalline (CC) phases with orientation of their chain axes being preferentially parallel or perpendicular to the film plane (c(parallel to) and c(perpendicular to) orientations), is studied. TGA analyses show that, for all the considered CC PPO films, temperatures of guest release for CC films with c(parallel to) orientation are definitely higher than those for CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation, with differences even higher than 100 degrees C. Correspondingly, DSC scans of CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation show separated endothermic peaks of guest release and melting, while CC films with c(parallel to) orientation only exhibit one broad endothermic peak with superimposed guest release, glass transition (T-g), and melting (T-m) phenomena. This control of temperatures of guest release could be helpful to maximize the thermal stability of host-guest PPO co-crystalline phases and to tailor temperatures of active guest release.

In the present study, positive matrix factorization (PMF) and compound-specific isotope analysis were used to investigate the in situ biodegradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediment cores collected from a pond at an e-waste recycling site in South China. The potential microorganisms relevant to the degradation of PBDEs were also assessed to aid in the understanding of in situ biodegradation. The PMF results suggested that reductive debromination took place in the sediments. The debromination signal (ratio of the concentration of factor S (PMF result) to the total PBDE content) was positively correlated with the relative abundance of Dehalococcoidetes at different core depths. The clear C-13 enrichment of five PBDE congeners (BDE 28, 47, 49, 99, and 153) with increasing core depth indicated that a measurable change in isotope fractionation might have occurred during PBDE biodegradation. The in situ biodegradation was further validated by the widespread detection of mono-BDE congeners (BDE 2, BDE 3) and diphenyl ether in the sediments. This study provides new evidence to enhance our understanding of the in situ biodegradation of PBDEs and suggests that the extensive removal of bromine from PBDEs was mediated by indigenous microorganisms at the e-waste site.

The main purpose of this study is to facilitate fragrance development on the basis of scientific knowledge. To this end, data on 314 perfumery raw materials (PRMs) showing the relationship between PRM odor intensity and gas concentration were obtained, and a calculation model for the data was then developed with the following features: (1) maximum PRM coverage, (2) calculating values implying odor intensity from only arbitrary gas concentration, and (3) estimating odor intensity from the calculated values directly and easily. To verify the prediction accuracy of this model, the predicted odor intensity was compared with the evaluated value for both single component and a mixture, and the same degree of root-mean-square error (RMSE) was confirmed. RMSE in the single component was 6.22 while that in the mixture was 6.69. Thus, the odor intensity of a PRM or mixture can be predicted from arbitrary gas concentrations.
