A new marine sediment certified reference material (IAEA 459) with very low concentrations (gkg(-1)) for a variety of persistent organic contaminants (POPs) listed by the Stockholm Convention, as well as other POPs and priority substances (PSs) listed in many environmental monitoring programs was developed by the IAEA. The sediment material was collected from the Ham River estuary in South Korea, and the assigned final values were derived from robust statistics on the results provided by selected laboratories which demonstrated technical and quality competence, following the guidance given in ISO Guide 35. The robust mean of the laboratory means was assigned as certified values, for those compounds where the assigned value was derived from at least five datasets and its relative expanded uncertainty was less than 40% of the assigned value (most of the values ranging from 8 to 20%). All the datasets were derived from at least two different analytical techniques which have allowed the assignment of certified concentrations for 22 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, 6 organochlorinated (OC) pesticides, 5 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs). Mass fractions of compounds that did not fulfill the criteria of certification are considered information values, which include 29 PAHs, 11 PCBs, 16 OC pesticides, and 5 PBDEs. The extensive characterization and associated uncertainties at concentration levels close to the marine sediment quality guidelines will make CRM 459 a valuable matrix reference material for use in marine environmental monitoring programs.

Methods for direct C-H trifluoromethoxylation of arenes and heteroarenes are rare, despite the importance of trifluoromethoxylated compounds for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and material sciences. Especially selective C-H trifluoromethoxylation of pyridines remains a formidable challenge. Here we show a general late-stage C-H trifluoromethoxylation of arenes and heteroarenes as limiting reagent with trifluoromethoxide anion. The reaction is mediated by silver salts under mild reaction conditions, exhibiting broad substrate scope and wide functional-group compatibility. In addition, ortho-position selective C-H trifluoromethoxylation of pyridines is observed. The method is not only applicable to the gram-scale synthesis of trifluoromethoxylated products but also allows efficient late-stage C-H trifluoromethoxylation of marketed small-molecule drugs, common pharmacophores and natural products. Selective C-H trifluoromethoxylation of pyridines remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Here, the authors report a silver-mediated late-stage C-H trifluoromethoxylation of arenes and heteroarenes as limiting reagents with trifluoromethoxide anion.

Casein kinase II (CK2) is an intensively studied enzyme, involved in different diseases, cancer in particular. Different scaffolds were used to develop inhibitors of this enzyme. Here, we report on the synthesis and biological evaluation of twenty phenolic, ketonic, and para-quinonic indeno[1,2-b]indole derivatives as CK2 inhibitors. The most active compounds were 5-isopropyl-1-methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-b]indole-9,10-dione 4h and 1,3-dibromo-5-isopropyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-b]indole-9,10-dione 4w with identical IC50 values of 0.11 mu M. Furthermore, the development of a QSAR model based on the structure of indeno[1,2-b]indoles was performed. This model was used to predict the activity of 25 compounds with naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione derivatives, which were previously predicted as CK2 inhibitors via a molecular modeling approach. The activities of four naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione derivatives were determined in vitro and one of them (N-isopentyl-2-methyl-4,9-dioxo-4,9-dihydronaphtho[2,3-b]furan-3-carboxamide) turned out to inhibit CK2 with an IC50 value of 2.33 mu M. All four candidates were able to reduce the cell viability by more than 60% after 24 h of incubation using 10 mu M.

Two new compounds, named penisclerotiorin A (1) and diaporthein C (8), and a new natural product, penidepsidone A (4), together with five known compounds (2, 3, 5-7) were isolated from the fungus Penicillium sclerotiorum GZU-XW03-2. Their structures were assigned using spectroscopic methods, quantum chemical calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Penisclerotiorin A (1) that belongs to the highly oxidized diphenyl ether is rare found in natural sources, and it was the sixth example of highly oxidized diphenyl ether analogues in natural sources. Penidepsidone A (4) is a new natural product and no any NMR spectral data were reported to date, in this paper, we firstly used the NMR calculations to confirm the intact structure by comparison of the experimental NMR data. Diaporthein C (8) represents the third example of pimarane diterpenes bearing a double bond at C-8 and C-9. In the bioassays, all of the isolates (1-8) were tested for their anti-inflammatory effects on the production of nitric oxide in lipopolysaccharide-induced microglial cells (RAW 264.7 cells). Compounds 2, 3 and 6 showed potent anti-inflammatory effects than the positive control (indomethacin, IC50, 24.0 mu M) with IC50 values of 11.52, 8.13 and 21.27 mu M, respectively.

In this paper, a novel approach to regioselective alpha- or gamma-hydroarylation of 3-allylchromones with electron-rich arenes has been presented. Results of this study indicated that the regioselectivity was dependent on the substituent at the gamma-position of the allyl group. Hydrogen or alkyl substitution favored alpha-hydroarylation, whereas aryl substitution favored gamma-hydroarylation. This methodology provides an efficient means to achieve the alpha- or gamma-selective hydroarylation of 3-allylchromones. Application of alpha-hydroarylation to perform Pd-catalyzed one-pot sequential alpha-hydroarylation and pi-chelation-assisted olefination has also been reported.

Iron-based metal-organic framework VNU-20 was utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst for cascade reactions between ketoximes and dibenzyl ether to produce 2,4,6-triphenylpyridines. Additionally, benzyl alcohol and (dimethoxymethyl) benzene could be used as an alternative starting materials for the transformation. The oxidant exhibited a remarkable impact on the reactions, and di-tertbutylperoxide was the most appropriate candidate. The VNU-20 displayed higher efficiency than many homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The catalyst was reusable for the cascade reactions without a noticeable deterioration in catalytic activity. This transformation is new, and would offer alternative routes to triphenylpyridines utilizing ketoximes as building blocks.

Magnetic nanospheres are versatile candidates for both fundamental and practical applications. Before they are applied in more complicated fields, their surface must be modified by several functionalities. However, the surface modification can be affected by the magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) embedded in the polymer matrix. Herein, the synthesis of poly(acrylic acid) coated magnetic nanospheres via a multiple polymerization route is described. During the synthesis process, seed emulsion polymerization was applied to redistribute the MNP in the polymer matrix, and the relationship between the structure of magnetic nanospheres and the thickness of the grafted poly(acrylic acid) layer was investigated. The development of size, morphology and magnetic properties of the nanospheres were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry. This work would pave the way to design and preparation of new structure of functional magnetic nanospheres with precise surface modification.

Many experimental studies have demonstrated that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects in vivo and in vitro. But epidemiological evidence and biomarkers related to early health effects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore biomarkers in the urine samples of workers occupationally exposed to a relatively low concentration of TiO2 NPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinan, China, involving 132 employees of a TiO2 NP manufacturing plant, among which the exposed group and control group were 1 : 1 matched by confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking. Untargeted metabolomics was performed in urine samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology. The differential metabolites between the TiO2 NP exposed group and the control group were analyzed and then screened for potential biomarkers using bioinformatics methods. Metabolomics found a total of 1760 differentially expressed metabolites in the TiO2 NP exposed group, of which 60 differential metabolites were simultaneously confirmed by one-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistical analysis. Among these 60 differential metabolites, the relative expression of 27 metabolites increased, and the remaining 33 decreased. Pathway enrichment analysis further found that the metabolic pathway of long chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase deficiency (Lcad) was significantly enriched. Ten differential metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs using machine learning methods, including dibenzyl ether, quassimarin, tryptophan, etc. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers showed good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers also had biological basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. Therefore, urine metabolites represented by dibenzyl ether are considered as good biomarkers of early health effects for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.

We have designed a functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) of UiO topology as a support, with an extremely high surface area, adjustable pore sizes and stable crystalline coordination polymeric structure and implanted copper (Cu) nanoparticles thereon. The core three dimensional Zr-derived MOF (UiO-66-NH2) was modified with a biguanidine moiety following a covalent post-functionalization approach. The morphological and physicochemical features of the material were determined using analytical methods such as FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDX, atomic mapping, XRD and ICP-OES. The SEM and XRD results justified the unaffected morphology of Zr-MOF after structural modifications. The as-synthesized UiO-66-biguanidine/Cu nanocomposite was catalytically explored in the aryl and heteroaryl Buchwald-Hartwig C-N and Ullmann type C-O cross coupling reactions with excellent yields. A library of biaryl amine and biaryl ethers was synthesized over the catalyst under mild and green conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst was isolated by centrifugation and recycled 11 times with no significant copper leaching or change in its activity.

Self-assembly of nanoparticles into ordered patterns is a novel approach to build up new consolidated materials with desired collective physical properties. Herein, nanoparticle assemblies of composition-modulated bimagnetic nanoparticles have been produced via slow evaporation of their colloidal suspension in the absence or presence of magnetic fields. The assemblies obtained in the presence of the magnetic fields exhibit oriented nanoparticle chains in face-centered cubic superlattice structures, compared with the hexagonal closed-packed superlattice obtained without the magnetic field. The oriented structure has an alignment of the easy magnetization axis along the chains. This alignment leads to enhanced intra-superlattice interactions. As a result, the field-induced assembly displays collective magnetic properties with significantly enhanced magnetic anisotropy, remanent magnetization and coercivity. It is also found that the bimagnetic FeCo/CoFe2O4 core/shell nanostructure enhances the intra-particle interaction and thus is beneficial for the growth of oriented assembly of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the collective magnetic behavior is evidenced by the observation of a superferromagnetic-like magnetization relaxation in the ac-susceptibility curves.
