Restrictions of legacy brominated flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), have resulted in increased usage of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs). Consequently, AHFRs contamination has caused a major concern in the scientific community. However, there is limited information on their presence in marine mussels. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels collected from 22 locations in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Our results revealed that Sigma AHFRs were ubiquitous in green mussels with concentrations in the range of 1.08-7.71 ng/g lipid weight (lw). Among target AHFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP) were predominant with their mean values of 1.19, 1.00 and 0.82 ng/g lw, respectively. There were negligible stereoisomer enrichments of DP in green mussels based on f(anti) values, indicating a limited bioaccumulation and metabolism of DP in green mussels. In comparison with other locations, concentrations of the AHFRs in green mussels determined here were at moderate levels. Additionally, there were significant linear relationships between some AHFRs (e.g., HBB and PBEB), suggesting their similar commercial applications and sources in the environment. The estimated daily intakes of AHFRs through consumption of green mussels by the local population in South China were 0.05-0.14 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.17-0.44 ng/kg body weight/day based on the mean and 95th concentrations, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels.

A simple method for the synthesis of nano crystalline ZSM-5 and Beta zeolites with trimodal porosity was developed using starch coated silica nanospheres (as silica precursor) for generating interparticle porosity (50-200 nm); propyltriethoxysilane was used as an additive for generating intercrystalline mesopores (2-50 nm) in the presence of microporous zeolite porogen. Loading of starch and propyltriethoxysilane additive played a pivotal role in obtaining trimodal porosity with very small size zeolite nanoparticles having high surface area and pore volume. The possible growth mechanism for the fabrication of trimodal porous zeolite is presented. The resultant zeolite demonstrated excellent acidity and activity in the liquid phase acid catalyzed reactions such as esterification of hexanoic/oleic acid with benzyl alcohol, condensation of benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone, and Friedel-Crafts alkylation followed by ring closure reaction for the synthesis of vitamin E when compared to conventional zeolite with excellent recyclability. Such an economical starch mediated synthesis strategy can be extended to other zeolite frameworks and similar heterogeneous catalytic materials.

To achieve high photovoltaic performance of bulk hetero-junction organic solar cells (OSCs), a range of critical factors including absorption profiles, energy level alignment, charge carrier mobility and miscibility of donor and acceptor materials should be carefully considered. For electron-donating materials, the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level that is beneficial for high open-circuit voltage is much appreciated. However, a new issue in charge transfer emerges when matching such a donor with an acceptor that has a shallower HOMO energy level. More to this point, the chemical strategies used to enhance the absorption coefficient of acceptors may lead to increased molecular crystallinity, and thus result in less controllable phase-separation of photoactive layer. Therefore, to realize balanced photovoltaic parameters, the donor-acceptor combinations should simultaneously address the absorption spectra, energy levels, and film morphologies. Here, we selected two non-fullerene acceptors, namely BTPT-4F and BTPTT-4F, to match with a wide-bandgap polymer donor P2F-EHp consisting of an imide-functionalized benzotriazole moiety, as these materials presented complementary absorption and well-matched energy levels. By delicately optimizing the blend film morphology, we demonstrated an unprecedented power conversion efficiency of over 16% for the device based on P2F-EHp:BTPTT-4F, suggesting the great promise of materials matching toward high-performance OSCs.

A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Background Despite tremendous progress has been achieved in tumor theranostic over the past decade, accurate identification and complete eradication of tumor cells remain a great challenge owing to the limitation of single imaging modality and therapeutic strategy. Results Herein, we successfully design and construct BiVO4/Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA) superparticles (SPs) for computed tomography (CT)/photoacoustic (PA)/magnetic resonance (MR) multimodal imaging and radiotherapy (RT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) synergistic therapy toward oral epithelial carcinoma. On the one hand, BiVO4 NPs endow BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs with impressive X-ray absorption capability due to the high X-ray attenuation coefficient of Bi, which is beneficial for their utilization as radiosensitizers for CT imaging and RT. On the other hand, Fe3O4 NPs impart BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs with the superparamagnetic property as a T-2-weighted contrast agent for MR imaging. Importantly, the aggregation of Fe3O4 NPs in SPs and the presence of PDA shell greatly improve the photothermal conversion capability of SPs, making BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs as an ideal photothermal transducer for PA imaging and PTT. By integrating advantages of various imaging modalities (CT/PA/MR) and therapeutic strategies (RT/PTT), our BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs exhibit the sensitive multimodal imaging feature and superior synergistic therapeutic efficacy on tumors. Conclusions Since there are many kinds of building blocks with unique properties appropriating for self-assembly, our work may largely enrich the library of nanomateirals for tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Herein, a light and magnetism dual stimuli-responsive composite (SR-Fe3O4@AMEO@SP) was designed and synthesized, by assembling the light sensitive spiropyran (SP) with magnetism responsive SR-Fe3O4 particle. The resultant composite was characterized in detail and light/magnetism-triggered, structural and functional responses of it were evaluated systematically. Such solid-composite exerted sensitive to light stimulus properly attributing to the rough and uneven nature of SR-Fe3O4 surface, which provided a large interspace for SP conformational transformation. Based on these, SR-Fe3O4@AMEO@SP composites with dynamically and reversibly light/magnetism dual stimuli-responsive properties for potential application in catalysis and adsorption fields can be offered.

Significant advancements in C-N bond formationviaC-H bond functionalisation have made it a staple in the production of nitrogen-containing compounds in both industry and academia. However, transition metal-free synthesis, particularly in the case of C(sp(3))-N formation, has remained a significant challenge to the synthetic community. Herein we report a procedure for alpha-C(sp(3))-H amination of ethereal compounds through use of azodicarboxylates as the nitrogen source and freely-available atmospheric oxygen to access ethereal radical intermediatesviaaerobic C-H activation. The use of fluorinated alcohols as solvent is observed to greatly increase the efficiency of the reaction and we show experimentally and theoretically the key role of H-bonding between fluorinated alcohols and azodicarboxylates. Calculations of the condensed Fukui functions of a H-bonded fluorinated alcohol-azodicarboxylate complex correlates with a significantly increased susceptibility of azodicarboxylates to undergo reaction with radicals, which informs a number of recent reports in the literature.

In this paper, two level III fugacity models are developed and applied using an environmental system containing six compartments, including air, aerosols, soil, water, suspended particulate matters (SPMs), and sediments, as a unit world. The first model, assumes equilibrium between air and aerosols and between water and SPMs. These assumptions lead to a four-fugacity model. The second model removes these two assumptions leading to a six-fugacity model. The two models, compared using four PBDE congeners, BDE-28, -99, -153, and -209, with a steady flux of gaseous congeners entering the air, lead to the following conclusions. 1. When the octanol-air partition coefficient (K-OA) is less than 10(11.4), the two models produce similar results; when K-OA > 10(11.4), and especially when K-OA > 10(12.5), the model results diverge significantly. 2. Chemicals are in an imposed equilibrium in the four-fugacity model, but in a steady state and not necessary an equilibrium in the six-fugacity model, between air and aerosols. 3. The results from the six-fugacity model indicate an internally consistent system with chemicals in steady state in all six compartments, whereas the four-fugacity model presents an internally inconsistent system where chemicals are in equilibrium but not a steady state between air and aerosols. 4. Chemicals are mass balanced in air and aerosols predicted by the six-fugacity model but not by the four-fugacity model. If the mass balance in air and aerosols is achieved in the four-fugacity model, the condition of equilibrium between air and aerosols will be no longer valid. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. To investigate overall pollution and potential risk of 32 targets (11 PBDEs, 8 NBFRs, and 13 OPFRs) in indoor and outdoor environments, dust and PM10 samples were sampled from non-occupational and occupational zones in Chengdu, China. Sigma Cl-OPFRs, BDE-209, and DBDPE were the dominant constitutes in both the non occupational and occupational dust. Regarding the PM10, no significant differences were found between the kitchen and the living room for studied OPFRs except TDCIPP, and TCEP, TCPP, TEHP, and TCP displayed significant correlation among the kitchen, the living room and personal samples. Profiles of the OPFRs in the PM10 from occupational areas presented great variation and ranked as: Sigma Aryl-OPFRs < Sigma Alkyl-OPFRs < Sigma Cl-OPFRs. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the investigated FRs via dust suggested dust ingestion and inhalation were the main exposure route to FRs, and the total of EDIs were at least one order of magnitude lower than reference data, indicating a low risk for the general public in Chengdu. However, with increasing usage of FRs in daily goods, a long-term monitoring should be conducted. Background: Neurotoxic effects of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) at low levels have not been well studied in human population, and whether the associations can be explained by thyroid hormones (THs) remains unclear. Objectives: We examined the associations of prenatal PBDE exposures with THs in cord plasma and neurobehavior of children at 2 and 4 years among general population in China. Methods: Participants were mother-child pairs in the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study. Nine PBDE congeners and THs (thyroid stimulating hormone, total thyroxine, free thyroxine, total triiodothyronine, and free triiodothyronine) were determined in cord plasma. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/1.5-5) were completed by caregivers to assess children’s neurobehavioral development at 2 and 4 years. In the final analyses, 199 and 307 mother-child pairs at 2 and 4 years were included to examine associations of PBDEs with CBCL scores using Pearson-scale-adjusted Poisson regressions, and 339 subjects were included in linear regression models to investigate the associations between PBDEs and THs. Results: BDE-47 had the highest detection rate of 83.82% with the median concentration of 0.19 ng/g lipid, followed by BDE-28, -99, -100 and -153 with detection rates nearly 50%. We found positive associations between prenatal PBDE concentrations and children’s neurobehavior, including Somatic Complaints, Withdrawn, Sleep Problems and Internalizing Problems in girls, and Somatic Complaints and Attention Problems in boys. We also observed inverse associations of the sum of BDE-47, – 28, – 99, -100 and -153 with THs. However, by adding THs to the models examining associations between PBDEs and CBCL, the main results didn’t measurably change. Conclusions: This study adds new knowledge that prenatal PBDEs at low levels may be related to long-lasting behavioral abnormalities in children and reduced THs in cord plasma. However, the hypothesis that the neurotoxic impact of PBDEs may be explained by alterations in cord THs was not supported.
