Recently high yield of cycloalkanes originates from selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil under mild conditions, which still encounters the great challenges. Herein, mordenite-supported ruthenium bifunctional catalyst (Ru3%/M) was prepared by using the deposition-precipitation (DP) method for the HDO reaction of the petroleum ether-extractable portions (PEEP) from alkali catalytic ethanolysis of lignin (CEOL). Ru3%/M catalyst was characterized systematically by XRD, XPS, FTIRS, NH3-TPD, N-2-adsorption, SEM, and TEM, indicating that it had the moderate acid sites and uniform Ru nanoparticles dispersion. The synthesized catalyst was further tested for the HDO per-formance of diphenyl ether, oxybis(methylene)dibenzene, and anisole, respectively. Results showed that three lignin model compounds can be converted to high yield of cycloalkanes under 160 degrees C and 3 MPa H-2 in n-hexane. This catalyst showed the high catalytic activity for diphenyl ether HDO reaction, the con -version decreased slightly to 87.6% after five recycle times. Furthermore, catalyst feed mass was the key factor for HDO reaction of raw PEEP from CEOL, promoting the HDO reaction process to produce high yield of cycloalkanes. Interestingly, the mass ratio between catalyst feed and raw PEEP was 1, thus 74.36% relative content (RC) of cycloalkanes can be obtained. The upgraded PEEP from CEOL has potential to be used as clean liquid fuels. (C) 2021 Energy Institute. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new convenient and versatile halogenating system (R(4)NHal/NOHSO4), giving straightforward and general access to halogenated 3,5-diaryl- and alkylarylisoxazoles, pyrazoles and electron-rich benzenes from the corresponding scaffolds, is suggested. The method provides excellent regioselectivity, scalability to the gram scale, and a broad scope for both aromatics and halogens. A three-step, one-pot reaction protocol was developed, and a series of 3,5-diaryl-4-haloisoxazoles has been efficiently synthesized from 1,2-diarylcyclopropanes under suggested nitrosating-halogenating conditions.

This study aimed to establish marine water quality criteria (MWQC) for emerging chemicals of concern (ECCs) for protecting aquatic life in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of South China. Despite the frequent occurrence and elevated concentrations of these ECCs in the GBA, there is a lack of regional MWQC for these contaminants. We screened 21 common ECCs that were classified into the following six groups: (1) new persistent organic contaminants; (2) brominated flame retardants; (3) perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances; (4) pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs); (5) plasticizers; and (6) personal care products. Globally, MWQC for PhACs remain largely unavailable despite their increasing occurrence in marine environments. Using an integrative scientific approach, we derived interim MWQC for the GBA with specific protection goals. The approach described herein can be applied for the derivation of MWQC for ECCs and the establishment of guidelines for ecological risk assessment in the GBA and other regions.

The current work explores deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as heat transfer fluids (HTFs) primarily for generating concentrated solar power. The eutectic composition of the DES comprising diphenyl ether and DL-menthol as the hydrogen bond acceptor and hydrogen bond donor was initially computed through the quantum chemical-based COSMO-SAC model. To improve upon the thermal performance and reduce the interfacial resistance, DESs were modified by dispersing hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles with weight percent ranging from 0.02 to 0.10. Thermophysical properties, namely, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity, of the HTFs were then measured as a function of temperature. Further, based on these four parameters, the Mouromtseff number (Mo) was calculated to rank the nanoparticle-dispersed DESs. The nanofluid consisting of DES-1 with 0.02 wt % of nanoparticles gave the highest Mo value, and hence, it was further considered for the experimental forced convection study and process simulation using an Aspen Plus simulator. From the forced convection experiment temperature profiles, the heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number (Nu) were evaluated and compared for nanofluids with the corresponding base fluid. The flow behavior of the thermal fluid along the characteristic length of the test section was investigated for both the laminar and turbulent regimes. The effectiveness of the HTF in terms of steam generation capacity was predicted, and it was observed that the nanofluid with 0.02 wt % was able to successfully convert 100% of the input water (15 kg/h) into superheated steam at the temperature of 494.15 K.

Control of the nanoscale molecular ordering and charge-carrier mobility of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) was achieved by the combined use of processing additives and thermal annealing. Evaluation of four processing additives (1,8-octanedithiol (ODT), diphenyl ether (DPE), 1-chloronaphthalene (CN), and 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), which are commonly used for the fabrication of organic solar cells, revealed that the nanoscale molecular ordering and, therefore, the charge-carrier mobility, are largely affected by the additives, as demonstrated by spectral absorption, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. Thermal annealing selectively influenced the morphological changes, depending on the solubility of P3HT in the additive at high temperature. In the case of CN, in which P3HT can be dissolved at moderate temperature, significant molecular ordering was observed even without thermal annealing. For DIO, in which P3HT is only soluble at elevated temperature, the mobility reached 1.14 x 10(-1) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) only after annealing. ODT and DPE were not effective as processing additives in a single-component P3HT. This study provides insight for designing the processing conditions to control the morphology and charge-transport properties of polymers.

Rationale: Structural remodeling or damage as a result of disease or injury is often not evenly distributed throughout a tissue but strongly depends on localization and extent of damaging stimuli. Skeletal muscle as a mechanically active organ can express signs of local or even systemic myopathic damage, necrosis, or repair. Conventionally, muscle biopsies (patients) or whole muscles (animal models) are mechanically sliced and stained to assess structural alterations histologically. Three-dimensional tissue information can be obtained by applying deep imaging modalities, e.g. multiphoton or light-sheet microscopy. Chemical clearing approaches reduce scattering, e.g. through matching refractive tissue indices, to overcome optical penetration depth limits in thick tissues. Methods: Here, we optimized a range of different clearing protocols. We find aqueous solution-based protocols employing (20-80%) 2,2′-thiodiethanol (TDE) to be advantageous over organic solvents (dibenzyl ether, cinnamate) regarding the preservation of muscle morphology, ease-of-use, hazard level, and costs. Results: Applying TDE clearing to a mouse model of local cardiotoxin (CTX)-induced muscle necrosis, a complete loss of myosin-II signals was observed in necrotic areas with little change in fibrous collagen or autofluorescence (AF) signals. The 3D aspect of myofiber integrity could be assessed, and muscle necrosis in whole muscle was quantified locally via the ratios of detected AF, forward- and backward-scattered Second Harmonic Generation (fSHG, bSHG) signals. Conclusion: TDE optical clearing is a versatile tool to study muscle architecture in conjunction with label-free multiphoton imaging in 3D in injury/myopathy models and might also be useful in studying larger biofabricated constructs in regenerative medicine.

Cleavage of ether bonds is a crucial but challenging step for lignin valorization. To efficiently realize this transformation, the development of robust catalysts or catalytic systems is required. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT)-supported Ru (denoted as Ru/MMT) is fabricated as a dual-functional heterogeneous catalyst to cleave various types of ether bonds through transfer hydrogenolysis without using any additional acids or bases. The prepared Ru/MMT material is found to efficiently catalyze the cleavage of various lignin models and lignin-derived phenols; cyclohexanes (fuels) and cyclohexanols (key intermediates) are the main products. The synergistic effect between electron-enriched Ru and the acidic sites on MMT contributes to the excellent performance of Ru/MMT. Systematic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through two possible reaction pathways, including the direct cleavage of ether bonds and the formation of intermediates with one hydrogenated benzene ring, for all examined types of ether bonds, namely, 4-O-5, alpha-O-4, and beta-O-4.

Waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain a high level of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), among which polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the most widely used additive BFRs. PBDEs are considered to be a type of persistent organic pollutants (POPS). The efficient removal/degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs is an urgent problem in electronic waste treatment, but the degradation of PBDEs is a great challenge due to their extreme stability and persistence in nature. In this study, a novel management strategy was developed for removal and degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs by using a simple subcritical methanol (SubCM) process. The results showed that reaction temperature, residence time, solid-to-liquid ratio, and additive NaOH are key factors influencing the removal of PBDEs from waste PCBs. Under optimal conditions (200 degrees C, 60 min, 1:20 g/mL), the removal efficiency of Sigma(8) PBDEs from waste PCBs could reach 91.3% and 98.8% for the proposed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. When the temperature is below 200 degrees C, highly brominated PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs were degraded into 2,’3,4′,6-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE71) and 2,4,4′-Tribromodiphenyl ether (BDE28) after SubCM treatment. 4-Bromophenyl ether (BDE4) and diphenyl ether were generated by the further debromination of BDE71 and BDE28 with the increase of treatment temperature. The debromination temperature of PBDEs congeners in SubCM could be markedly lowered by adding 4 g/L of NaOH. The complete debromination of PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs could be achieved at 300 degrees C and 250 degrees C for the developed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. A copper-catalysed hydroxylation of diaryliodoniums to generate phenols and diaryl ethers is reported. This method allows the synthesis of diversely functionalized phenols under mild reaction conditions without the need for a strong inorganic base or an expensive noble-metal catalyst. Significantly, convenient application of diaryliodoniums is demonstrated in the preparation of diaryl ethers in a one-pot operation.

The Name is Diphenyl oxide. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 101-84-8.

To investigate the status of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in indoor dust in China, published scientific studies were systematically collected and analyzed. The analysis revealed large variations among microenvironments, including offices (median: 14.59 mu g/g) and e-waste workshops (median: 13.36 mu g/g), with high levels of OPFRs contamination. Chlorinated organophosphate ester flame retardants (CI-OPFRs) were the dominant OPFRs (52-75%) in most indoor dust samples; however, in ewaste workshops, aryl- and alkyl-OPFRs were the most abundant. As an alternative flame retardant to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), OPFRs concentrations have increased in recent years in indoor environments in China. Urban sources are of greatest concern: Shanghai (mean: 13.54 mu g/g), Guangzhou (mean: 10.76 mu g/g), and Beijing (mean: 9.37 mu g/g) have high EOPFRs contamination levels in indoor dust. Compared to other countries, the OPFRs concentrations in indoor dust in all studied microenvironments from China (median: 8.81 mu g/g) were low. The estimated daily intakes of EOPFRs by dust ingestion for adults and children were 2.12 and 11.06 ng/kg/body weight/day (average), respectively. Human exposure to OPFRs through the accidental intake of indoor dust does not pose a direct health risk to the Chinese population. However, indoor dust ingestion is an important route for human exposure to OPFRs. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
