Concentrated solar power (CSP) is one of the emerging renewable energy technology, where sunlight is concentrated from a large area and is stored in a collector filled with heat-transfer fluid (HTF). The current work reports the synthesis of novel HTF based on menthol-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). DES consisting of a hydrogen bond acceptor, namely, DL-menthol and a hydrogen bond donor (oleyl alcohol), has been prepared and explored to evaluate its effectiveness as a thermal fluid. The thermal properties, namely, viscosity, density, thermal conductivity (TC), and heat capacity, are measured and compared with both conventional and commercial solvents within the temperature range T = 298.15-353.15 K. The density of DES was found to decrease with increase in temperature, while the rheological measurements suggest a Newtonian fluid with its shear viscosity decreasing exponentially with increasing temperature. The TC of the DES was found to be similar to 0.161 W/m K, which decreases linearly with temperature, while a contrary was observed for heat capacity. Further, the performance of these solvents has been evaluated in a forced convective heat-transfer configuration under laminar flow conditions with N-Re = 105, 155, and 260. The convective heat-transfer experiments demonstrated the fact that the thermal entrance length of the DES is very large because of its high viscosity and low TC. The convective heat-transfer data, namely, heat-transfer coefficient and Nusselt number, were compared with the in-house AnuPravaha CFD simulator under laminar conditions. From the obtained thermophysical properties, it is confirmed that the synthesized DES can be used as a next-generation heat storage media in the CSP plant.

Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in surface sediment from five estuaries of central coasts of Vietnam to understand the spatial distributions and seasonal variations. The contamination pattern was in the order: PCBs (9.72-3730 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > PBDEs (11.8-311 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > DDTs (0.462-26.7 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > HCHs (0.491-22.6 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > endosulfan compounds (0.196-19.4 ng g(-1) dry wt.). DDTs and HCHs showed a little geographical variation, whereas PCBs and PBDEs exhibited clearer spatial distribution trend. Elevated concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were detected in some sites in Nghe An and Quang Birth Province, which could be related to the human activities such as tourism, transportation, and domestic consumption. Seasonal variations of DDTs and HCHs were observed, showing higher residues in rainy seasons.

A simple method for the synthesis of nano crystalline ZSM-5 and Beta zeolites with trimodal porosity was developed using starch coated silica nanospheres (as silica precursor) for generating interparticle porosity (50-200 nm); propyltriethoxysilane was used as an additive for generating intercrystalline mesopores (2-50 nm) in the presence of microporous zeolite porogen. Loading of starch and propyltriethoxysilane additive played a pivotal role in obtaining trimodal porosity with very small size zeolite nanoparticles having high surface area and pore volume. The possible growth mechanism for the fabrication of trimodal porous zeolite is presented. The resultant zeolite demonstrated excellent acidity and activity in the liquid phase acid catalyzed reactions such as esterification of hexanoic/oleic acid with benzyl alcohol, condensation of benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone, and Friedel-Crafts alkylation followed by ring closure reaction for the synthesis of vitamin E when compared to conventional zeolite with excellent recyclability. Such an economical starch mediated synthesis strategy can be extended to other zeolite frameworks and similar heterogeneous catalytic materials.

A micro fabricated chip-based wearable air sampler was used to monitor the personnel exposure of volatile chemical concentrations in microenvironments. Six teenagers participated in this study and 14 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including naphthalene, 3-decen-1-ol, hexanal, nonanal, methyl salicylate and limonene gave the highest abundance during routine daily activity. VOC exposure associated with daily activities and the location showed strong agreements with two of the participant’s results. One of these subjects had the highest exposure to methyl salicylate that was supported by the use of a topical analgesic balm containing this compound. Environmental based air quality monitoring followed by the personnel exposure studies provided additional evidence associated to the main locations where the participants traveled. Toluene concentrations observed at a gas station were exceptionally high, with the highest amount observed at 1213.1 ng m(-3). One subject had the highest exposure to toluene and the GPS data showed clear evidence of activities neighboring a gas station. This study shows that this wearable air sampler has potential applications including hazardous VOC exposure monitoring in occupational hazard assessment for certain professions, for example in industries that involve direct handling of petroleum products.

Today, using new energy storage systems for peak shaving and load leveling with the approach of maximizing the efficiency of energy systems is inevitable. In the present study, a cogeneration integrated structure of power and cooling using liquefied natural gas regasification and solar collectors is developed and analyzed. In this regard, the purposes can be achieved by producing liquid air at an off-peak time and storing it as a cryogenic energy storage system and recovering it on-peak time. This new integrated structure generates 11.66 MW power and 4.502 MW cooling at the on-peak time. A Kalina-based combined cooling and power cycle and a gas turbine power generation unit are used to generate power from liquid air. Phase change material is used to store the heat from the compressed air entering the liquefaction stage (at the off-peak time) and recovering it at the on-peak time as the heat source of the Kalina cycle. Also, the solar parabolic trough collector provided with Zahedan climatic conditions the heat required for the direct expansion section. The electrical storage, round-trip, energy storage, and exergy efficiencies of the proposed energy storage system are 57.62%, 45.44%, 79.87%, and 40.17%, respectively. The most exergy destruction belongs to the heat exchangers section, which accounts for 50.85% of the total exergy destruction. One of the important results of the parametric study is the increase of round-trip and electrical storage efficiencies up to 47.59% and 61.60%, respectively, by minimizing the pressure of the inlet air to the liquefaction stage while maximizing the pressure of the liquid air inlet to the power generation stage.

Single-atom catalysts are emerging as primary catalysts for many reactions due to their 100% utilization of active metal centers leading to high catalytic efficiencies. Herein, we report the use of a single-atom Co catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of the -O-4 bonds of lignin model compounds at a low oxygen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol up to 95% with high selectivities was achieved with a variety of substrates investigated. The reusability of the Co catalyst with a high catalytic efficiency indicates its potential application in the oxidative cleavage of C-O bonds.

Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) activation has found to ameliorate diabetes in animal models. However, no CAR agonists are available clinically. Therefore, a safe and effective CAR activator would be an alternative option. In this study, sixty courmarin derivatives either synthesized or purified from Artemisia capillaris were screened for CAR activation activity. Chemical modifications were on position 5,6,7,8 with mono-, di-, tri-, or tetra-substitutions. Among all the compounds subjected for in vitro CAR activation screening, 6,7-diprenoxycoumarin was the most effective and was selected for further preclinical studies. Chemical modification on the 6 position and unsaturated chains were generally beneficial. Electron-withdrawn groups as well as long unsaturated chains were hazardous to the activity. Mechanism of action studies showed that CAR activation of 6,7-diprenoxycoumarin might be through the inhibition of EGFR signaling and upregulating PP2Ac methylation. To sum up, modification mimicking natural occurring coumarins shed light on CAR studies and the established screening system provides a rapid method for the discovery and development of CAR activators. In addition, one CAR activator, scoparone, did showed anti-diabetes effect in db/db mice without elevation of insulin levels.

Aryl-aryl cross-coupling constitutes one of the most widely used procedures for the synthesis of high-value materials that range from pharmaceuticals to organic electronics and conducting polymers. The assembly of (hetero)biaryl scaffolds generally requires multiple steps; coupling partners must be functionalized before the key bond-forming event is considered. The development of selective C-H arylation processes in arenes-which sidestep the need for prefunctionalized partners-is thus crucial for streamlining the construction of these key architectures. Here we report an expedient, one-pot assembly of (hetero)biaryl motifs using photocatalysis and two non-prefunctionalized arene partners. The approach is underpinned by the functionalization of a C-H bond in an arene coupling partner using the interrupted Pummerer reaction. A unique pairing of the organic photoredox catalyst and the intermediate dibenzothiophenium salts enables highly selective reduction in the presence of sensitive functionalities. The utility of the metal-free, one-pot strategy is exemplified by the synthesis of a bioactive natural product and the modification of complex molecules of societal importance.

Investigating environmental pollution is important to understand its impact on endangered species such as green turtles (Chelonia mydas). In this study, we investigated the accumulation and potential toxicity of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and naturally occurring MeO-PBDEs in liver, fat, kidney and muscle of turtles (n = 30) of different gender, size, year of death, location and health status. Overall, POP concentrations were low and accumulation was highest in liver and lowest in fat which is likely due to the poor health of several animals, causing a remobilization of lipids and associated compounds. PCBs and p,p’-DDE dominated the POP profiles, and relatively high MeO-PBDE concentrations (2′-MeO-BDE 68 up to 192 ng/g lw, 6-MeO-BDE 47 up to 79 ng/g lw) were detected in all tissues. Only few influences of factors such as age, gender and location were found. While concentrations were low compared to other marine wildlife, biological toxicity equivalences obtained by screening the tissue extracts using the micro-EROD assay ranged from 2.8 to 356 pg/g and the highest values were observed in muscle, followed by kidney and liver. This emphazises that pollutant mixtures found in the turtles have the potential to cause dioxin-like effects in these animals and that dioxin-like compounds should not be overlooked in future studies. In the present study, the fingernails of e-waste-dismantling workers from Longtang town, Qingyuan city, rural residents from Shijiao town, Qingyuan city, and urban residents from Guangzhou city, respectively, were collected from South China to monitor the human burdens of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). The median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs in the nails of the e-waste-dismantling workers, and urban and rural residents were 412, 129, and 82.1 ng g(-1), respectively, and the median concentrations of Sigma(20)PCBs were 108, 8.4, and 22.1 ng g(-1), respectively. The levels of PCBs and PBDEs in the nails of e-waste-dismantling workers were significantly higher as compared to those for urban and rural residents (p< 0.05), implying the continuous and greater exposure to these chemicals in the e-waste recycling areas. BDE 209 (92-98%) was the major congener of PBDEs and CB 52 (26-51%) was the main congener of PCB in nail samples. However, no significant gender difference was observed for PBDE and PCB levels in nails from all three investigated areas, and no significant correlation was found between their levels and the age of the participants. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) of CBs 95 and 132 indicated that the external sources (e.g.dust and/or air) were the primary sources for CBs 95 and 132 in human nails from the e-waste area, while the contribution from the internal sources (e.g.serum) could be in a small percentage. The results of this study indicate that human nails can be used as a proper indicator of human exposure to PCBs and PBDEs, and further studies are needed by a comprehensive investigation of the relationships between the PCB and PBDE levels in the nails and serum and/or other internal tissues.
