Atmospheric fine particle (PM2.5) samples were collected over a whole year (April 2016 – March 2017) across five sampling locations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, to investigate the occurrence of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of Sigma(9)NBFRs were in the range of 0.63-104 pg/m(3) (15.6 +/- 16.8 pg/m(3)) in atmospheric PM2.5, while the levels of Sigma 9PBDEs (excluding BDE-209) ranged from 0.05 to 19.1 pg/m(3) (2.9 +/- 3.8 pg/m(3)) and BDE-209 concentrations ranged from 0.88 to 138 pg/m(3) (22 +/- 28 pg/m(3)). Relatively higher levels of NBFRs and PBDEs were found at urban sampling sites in Beijing City and Shijiazhuang City. Decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) and BDE-209 were the dominant compounds with the relative abundances of 72% in Sigma(9)NBFRs and 90% in Sigma 10PBDEs, respectively. Generally, the levels of most target BFRs in summer were lower than those in other seasons. However, there were no notable seasonal differences in levels of DBDPE and BDE-209 in atmospheric PM2.5 samples across the BTH region. Significant and positive correlations were found between the concentrations of BFRs and PM2.5. Daily human exposure via inhalation revealed that children have a higher probability of suffering from the adverse effects of BFRs than that of adults. In addition, residents living near sampling locations across the BTH region may suffer high exposure risks to BDE-209 and NBFRs.

Introduction: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing worldwide. Recent studies have suggested that environmental factors, such as exposure to brominated flame retardants (BFRs), could play a role in the epidemic of T2D. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the dietary exposure to BFRs (Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Polybromodiphenylether (PBDE)) and T2D risk in the E3N prospective cohort of French women. Research design and methods: Overall, 71,415 women followed for 19 years were included in the study. We performed Cox regression models to analyze the association between dietary exposure to BFRs and T2D risk. Results: Overall 71,415 women were included and 3667 (5.13%) developed a T2D during follow-up. The mean dietary exposure to HBCD and to PBDE was 0.22 ng/kg body weight (BW)/day and 1.21 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. There was a positive linear association between dietary exposure to HBCD and T2D risk starting from the 2nd quintile group (HR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.06-1.30) to the 5th quintile group (HR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.29-1.67) when compared to the 1st quintile group. We also found positive although non-linear associations between dietary exposure to PBDE and T2D risk, with an increased HR only for the 2nd and 4th vs. 1st quintile groups (HR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.02-1.24, and HR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.08-1.34, respectively). Conclusion: The findings suggest an association between dietary exposure to BFRs and T2D risk, highlighting the importance of further investigating this association the long-term health effects of endocrine disruptors in the general population. Additional studies are needed to reproduce these findings in other populations and clarify the underlying biological mechanisms.

Self-assembly of nanoparticles into ordered patterns is a novel approach to build up new consolidated materials with desired collective physical properties. Herein, nanoparticle assemblies of composition-modulated bimagnetic nanoparticles have been produced via slow evaporation of their colloidal suspension in the absence or presence of magnetic fields. The assemblies obtained in the presence of the magnetic fields exhibit oriented nanoparticle chains in face-centered cubic superlattice structures, compared with the hexagonal closed-packed superlattice obtained without the magnetic field. The oriented structure has an alignment of the easy magnetization axis along the chains. This alignment leads to enhanced intra-superlattice interactions. As a result, the field-induced assembly displays collective magnetic properties with significantly enhanced magnetic anisotropy, remanent magnetization and coercivity. It is also found that the bimagnetic FeCo/CoFe2O4 core/shell nanostructure enhances the intra-particle interaction and thus is beneficial for the growth of oriented assembly of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the collective magnetic behavior is evidenced by the observation of a superferromagnetic-like magnetization relaxation in the ac-susceptibility curves.

Magnetic biopolymer hybrid nanoparticles have gained a lot of attention in the field of biomedical applications. Here we present the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated magnetic clusters of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Firstly, the superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, composition and magnetic properties. Secondly, magnetic nanoclusters were prepared and wrapped with HA grafted with an ethylene glycol-based copolymer. The resulting nanostructures and nanobeads were characterized using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. The clustering of magnetite nanoparticles facilitates magnetic purification, separation, rapid attraction and controlled positioning by high field gradient micro-magnet arrays. In addition, clusters could be formed in the presence of a fluorescent drug model, which demonstrates the possibility of dual functionalization of our hybrid nanosystems: magnetic responsiveness and drug encapsulation.

We present the synthesis of lanthanum nitrate nanoparticles via the polyol method. A crystallographic study of La(NO3)(3)center dot 4H(2)O nanoparticles was carried out using the Rietveld method and XRD to detect the phases of the yield: alpha (monoclinic) and beta (orthorhombic) phases were obtained. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a unique dehydration process in the 65 degrees C-245 degrees C temperature range and a dehydroxylation phase in the 333 degrees C-558 degrees C temperature range. Using TEM-EDX, and DLS, the purity of the material was evaluated; a spherical shape morphology and monodispersity were observed. The absorbance at 1340-1440 cm(-1) and 1500-1600 cm(-1) (IR regions) of the lanthanum nanoparticles was deconvolved to increase the resolution of the chemical imprint in these regions.

Catalytic N-alkylation of amines by alcohols to produce desired amines is an important catalytic reaction in industry. Various noble-metal-based homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been reported for this process. The development of cheap non-noble-metal heterogeneous catalysts for the N-alkylation reaction would be highly desirable. Hereby, we propose the N-alkylation of amines by alcohols over a cheap and efficient heterogeneous catalyst-titanium hydroxide. This catalyst provides a selectivity higher than 90% to secondary amines for functionalized aromatic and aliphatic alcohols and amines with high catalytic activity and stability. Mild Bronsted acidity formed by the continuous rehydration of Lewis acidity excludes the side reactions and deactivation by adsorbed species. The mechanism of the reaction involves dehydration of alcohols to ethers with subsequent C-O bond cleavage by amine with the formation of secondary amine and recovery of alcohol.

Psoralen is a furocoumarin natural product that intercalates within DNA and forms covalent adducts when activated by ultraviolet radiation. It is well known that this property contributes to psoralen’s clinical efficacy in several disease contexts, which include vitiligo, psoriasis, graft-versus-host disease and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Given the therapeutic relevance of psoralen and its derivatives, we attempted to synthesize psoralens with even greater potency. In this study, we report a library of 73 novel psoralens, the largest collection of its kind. When screened for the ability to reduce cell proliferation, we identified two derivatives even more cytotoxic than 4 ‘-aminomethyl-4,5 ‘,8-trimethylpsoralen (AMT), one of the most potent psoralens identified to date. Using MALDI-TOF MS, we studied the DNA adduct formation for a subset of novel psoralens and found that in most cases enhanced DNA binding correlated well with cytotoxicity. Generally, our most potent derivatives contain positively charged substituents, which we believe increase DNA affinity and enhance psoralen intercalation. Thus, we provide a rational approach to guide efforts toward further optimizing psoralens to fully capitalize on this drug class’ therapeutic potential. Finally, the structure-activity insights we have gained shed light on several opportunities to study currently underappreciated aspects of psoralen’s mechanism.

Magnesium-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (Mg-ACC), amorphous magnesium calcium silicate hydrate (MCSH), and hydroxyapatite (HAp) are prepared by a precipitation method. By cold-pressing these particles, it is possible to produce porous bulk discs with a narrow pore size distribution. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.

High efficiencies of organic solar cells (OSCs) are generally achieved for small-area devices processed from halogenated solvents, which are hazardous to human health and pollute the environment. Commercialization of OSCs requires the development of novel photovoltaic materials, which are suitable for large-scale fabrication of devices through printable techniques using environmentally-friendly solvents. In this work, we report the synthesis of two novel polymers comprising thiazolothiazole, benzothiadiazole (P1), and benzoxadiazole (P2) moieties and the fabrication of polymer-fullerene OSCs and photovoltaic modules by blade coating under ambient conditions. The P1-based solar cells and larger area modules showed tolerance to processing solvents and delivered encouraging efficiencies illustrating polymer P1 as a promising material for environment friendly large-area photovoltaics. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.
