Large area processing of organic photovoltaic cells and modules is a key step towards commercialization. At the same time, the scale-up of fabrication entails careful evaluation and selection of solvents, and optimization of processing parameters. It has been proven that using proper processing additives in polymer:PCBM bulk-heterojunction solution is one of the most effective strategies to improve the performance of organic photovoltaic cells. Here we report a new transition solvent strategy of using non-halogenated solvents to fabricate PDTSTPD: PC71BM based active layers. This strategy uses a combination of miscible good main solvent such as 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and coadditives such as diphenyl ether (DPE) and 1-methylnaphtalene (MeN) for middle molecular weight PDTSTPD, or 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and MeN for high molecular weight PDTSTPD to tune the nano-scale morphology of the active layer during the film drying process. Inverted organic photovoltaic cells with an active area of 1cm(2) on PET substrate fabricated by a blade coating process using the formulated ink have demonstrated a power conversion efficiency up to 5 %.

Firefighters (FF) are exposed to recognized and probable carcinogens, yet there are few studies of chemical exposures and associated health concerns in women FFs, such as breast cancer. Biomonitoring often requires a priori selection of compounds to be measured, and so, it may not detect relevant, lesser known, exposures. The Women FFs Biomonitoring Collaborative (WFBC) created a biological sample archive and conducted a general suspect screen (GSS) to address this data gap. Using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry, we sought to identify candidate chemicals of interest in serum samples from 83 women FFs and 79 women office workers (OW) in San Francisco. We identified chemical peaks by matching accurate mass from serum samples against a custom chemical database of 722 slightly polar phenolic and acidic compounds, including many of relevance to firefighting or breast cancer etiology. We then selected tentatively identified chemicals for confirmation based on the following criteria: (1) detection frequency or peak area differences between OW and FF; (2) evidence of mammary carcinogenicity, estrogenicity, or genotoxicity; and (3) not currently measured in large biomonitoring studies. We detected 620 chemicals that matched 300 molecular formulas in the WFBC database, including phthalate metabolites, phosphate flame-retardant metabolites, phenols, pesticides, nitro and nitroso compounds, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Of the 20 suspect chemicals selected for validation, 8 were confirmed-including two alkylphenols, ethyl paraben, BPF, PFOSAA, benzophenone-3, benzyl p-hydroxybenzoate, and triphenyl phosphate-by running a matrix spike of the reference standards and using m/z, retention time, and the confirmation of at least two fragment ions as criteria for matching. GSS provides a powerful highthroughput approach to identify and prioritize novel chemicals for biomonitoring and health studies.

A green, cost-effective and facile steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) strategy was developed to synthesize core-shell-structured zeolite composites with different frameworks between the core and shell. Chemical incompatibility from different structures has been circumvented by dip-coating Silicalite-1 seeds and an in situ transformation process. Beta@Silicalite-1 zeolites with a nanoscale polycrystal Silicalite-1 shell wrapped around the monocrystal Beta core was synthesized. The crystallization process and synthetic parameters, such as the composition of the core, crystallization temperature and gel composition of the seed solution, were investigated. The results revealed the importance of stability of the core and the crystallization rate of the Silicalite-1 shell. Interestingly, a trace amount of aluminum in the core zeolite could help resist corrosion during crystallization. Further investigation on alkylation and etherification reactions over Beta@Silicalite-1 demonstrated the advantage in selectivity control toward self-etherification versus alkylation.

The dependence of polymer film transparency on different kinds of planar orientations of nanoporous-crystalline (NC) phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) is described. The two polymers exhibit opposite behavior: film transparency is improved for sPS and PPO by orientations of the chain axes of the NC phases being parallel (c(parallel to)) and perpendicular (c(perpendicular to)) to the film plane, respectively. This behavior can be rationalized by the negative and positive birefringence of sPS and PPO chains, respectively. In fact, to maximize transparency, the refractive index of the NC phase along the perpendicular to the film plane has to be increased to come closer to that of the corresponding amorphous phase. This can be pursued by controlling the orientation of the NC phases and hence of the associated refractive index ellipsoids.

A novel and highly active zeolite Y/ZSM-5 composite zeolite (CZ)-supported nickel catalyst (Ni/CZ with 10% of Ni loading) was prepared by modified deposition-precipitation to uniformly disperse Ni nanoparticles (NNPs) onto CZ. Hecaogou subbituminous coal was exhaustively extracted with isometric carbon disulfide/acetone mixed solvent to afford the extractable portion and inextractable portion (IEP). Ethanol-soluble portion (ESP) was obtained by ethanolyzing the IEP at 300 degrees C and subjected to catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) over Ni-10%/CZ at 160 degrees C to afford catalytically hydroconverted ESP (CHCESP). Both ESP and CHCESP were analyzed with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), and quadrupole exactive orbitrap mass spectrometer. The results show that the relative contents (RCs) of both chain alkanes and hydroarenes in CHCESP are significantly higher than those in ESP and cyclanes and alkenes were only detected in CHCESP, while the RCs of both arenes and oxygen-containing organic compounds in CHCESP are much lower than those in ESP and nitrogen- and/or sulfur-containing organic compounds were only detected in ESP with GC/MS. According to the CHC of oxybis(methylene)dibenzene (OBMDB), Ni-10%/CZ can effectively activate H-2 to biatomic active hydrogen (H center dot center dot center dot H) and the resulting H center dot center dot center dot H was heterolytically split into an immobile H- attached on Ni/CZ and a mobile H+. H+ transfers to an oxygen atom (OA) in OBMDB and cleaves the C-O bridged bond to produce phenylmethanol (PM) and benzylium, followed by H- abstraction from the Ni/CZ surface by benzylium to form toluene. H+ transfer to the OA in PM also leads to the cleavage of the C-O bond in PM to produce H2O and benzylium, which abstracts H- from the Ni/CZ surface to yield toluene. H center dot center dot center dot H transfer to the benzene ring in toluene generates methylcyclohexane. Therefore, Ni-10%/CZ catalyzes both H+ and H center dot center dot center dot H transfer. In addition, it proved to be stable for the CHC of OBMDB after 3 cycles.

This study illustrated the pyrolysis of banana peel (BP) as a potential waste management solution. Samples were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), elemental analysis, and high heating value (HHV) calculation. After pyrolysis experiments were performed at different heating rates (10, 20, 30, and 40 degrees C min(-1)) by using a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with FTIR (TG-FTIR), the apparent activation energies were computed with Friedman, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) methods, and the evolved gaseous products were analyzed simultaneously. During pyrolysis, BP underwent three devolatilization steps accompanied by the evolution of some major gaseous products, including CO2, CH4, H2O, CH3COOH, C=C, C6H5OH, HCOOH, and CH3CH2OH. Among them, C=C, CH3COOH, and CO2 accounted for approximately 71.56% of the total gaseous products. Gas evolution was more significantly influenced by the pyrolysis temperature than by the heating rate. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis confirmed the presence of some high-energy compounds and valuable chemicals containing aromatic, aldehyde, ketone, and other functional groups. In terms of preliminary energy balance, more than 70% of the total energy output was attributed to the liquid pyrolytic products followed by the solid and gaseous products. The energy recovery ratio of BP pyrolysis was superior to that of other fuel feedstocks. This work provided insights into resolving environmental problems associated with BP management by pyrolyzing BP as a potential source of renewable bioenergy.

The formation of carbon-nitrogen bonds for the preparation of aromatic amines is among the top five reactions carried out globally for the production of high-value materials, ranging from from bulk chemicals to pharmaceuticals and polymers. As a result of this ubiquity and diversity, methods for their preparation impact the full spectrum of chemical syntheses in academia and industry. In general, these molecules are assembled through the stepwise introduction of a reactivity handle in place of an aromatic C-H bond (that is, a nitro group, halogen or boronic acid) and a subsequent functionalization or cross-coupling. Here we show that aromatic amines can be constructed by direct reaction of arenes and alkyl amines using photocatalysis, without the need for pre-functionalization. The process enables the easy preparation of advanced building blocks, tolerates a broad range of functionalities, and multigram scale can be achieved via a batch-to-flow protocol. The merit of this strategy as a late-stage functionalization platform has been demonstrated by the modification of several drugs, agrochemicals, peptides, chiral catalysts, polymers and organometallic complexes.

This article reports the thermal and fire behaviors of a high performance polymer, namely polyimide (PI). These behaviors were investigated using different techniques and tests, i.e., pyrolysis-Gas-Chromatography/MassSpectrometry (py-GC/MS) and TGA coupled with a Fourier Transform InfraRed spectrometer (TGA-FTIR), and mass loss cone (MLC) at different heat fluxes. It was observed that the thermal stability of PI strongly depends on the oxygen concentration. The main identified gases released during thermal degradation are: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water and organic compounds (phenol, aniline, cyanobenzene, dicyanobenzene, 4-aminophenol, benzene, 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione, phthalimide, dibenzofuran, and diphenylether). The ignition of PI in MLC experiment is observed under an external heat flux of 60 kW/m2. In that case, the peak of heat released by polyimide is only 30 kW/m2. Based on these investigations, a possible decomposition pathway of PI is proposed.

Pearl-farming leads to significant plastic pollution in French Polynesia (FP) as the end of life of most farming gear is currently poorly managed. Plastic debris released into the aquatic environment accumulates, with potentially detrimental effects on the lagoon ecosystem and pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, a species of ecological, commercial and social value. Here, we tested the effects of leachates from new (N) and aged (A) plastic pearl-farming gear (spat collector and synthetic rope) obtained after 24 h and 120 h incubation, on the embryo-larval development of the pearl oyster using an in-vitro assay. Embryos were exposed for 24 h and 48 h to a negative control (0) and the leachate from 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 g of plastic. L-1. After 24 h exposure to leachate at 100 g.L-1, effects were observed on embryo development (-38% to -60% of formed larvae) and mortality (+72% to +82%). Chemical analyses of plastic gear indicated the presence of 26 compounds, consisting of organic contaminants (PAHs) and additives (mainly phthalates). Screening of leachates demonstrated that these compounds leach into the surrounding seawater with an additional detection of pesticides. Higher levels of phthalates were measured in leachates obtained from new (6.7-9.1 mg.L-1) than from aged (0.4-0.5 mg.L-1) plastics, which could be part of the explanation of the clear difference in toxicity observed after 48 h exposure at lower concentrations (0.1-10 g.L-1), associated with mortality ranging from 26 to 86% and 17-28%, respectively. Overall, this study suggests that plastic gear used in the pearl-farming industry releases significant amounts of hazardous chemicals over their lifetime, which may affect pearl oyster development that call for in-situ exploration. The kinetics of the hydrolysis of heavy hydrocarbons in supercritical water were probed using density function theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the probe molecule dibenzyl ether (DBE). The focus of the study was the effect of solvent on the reaction kinetics. The DFT studies were aimed at the estimation of the kinetic parameters and the transition-state structure, whereas the MD studies were aimed at the estimation of the solubility parameters used in a model of the reaction nonidealities. Both DFT results, with an imposed dielectric constant to represent the solvent polarity, and the MD results, where the solubility parameter was estimated, indicated that the fastest kinetics were attained at the highest polarity. The COSMO-sigma profiles obtained from DFT calculations revealed that the transition state for the reaction was more polar than the reactants. The MD simulation provided estimates of the solubility parameters of reactants and the transition state, which allowed a complementary estimate of the rate of the reaction in a supercritical water solution via transition-state theory. The rates of reaction estimated from DFT and MD calculations at 674 K were in fair agreement with experimental data at low values of the dielectric constant.
