We present the synthesis of lanthanum nitrate nanoparticles via the polyol method. A crystallographic study of La(NO3)(3)center dot 4H(2)O nanoparticles was carried out using the Rietveld method and XRD to detect the phases of the yield: alpha (monoclinic) and beta (orthorhombic) phases were obtained. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a unique dehydration process in the 65 degrees C-245 degrees C temperature range and a dehydroxylation phase in the 333 degrees C-558 degrees C temperature range. Using TEM-EDX, and DLS, the purity of the material was evaluated; a spherical shape morphology and monodispersity were observed. The absorbance at 1340-1440 cm(-1) and 1500-1600 cm(-1) (IR regions) of the lanthanum nanoparticles was deconvolved to increase the resolution of the chemical imprint in these regions.

To achieve high photovoltaic performance of bulk hetero-junction organic solar cells (OSCs), a range of critical factors including absorption profiles, energy level alignment, charge carrier mobility and miscibility of donor and acceptor materials should be carefully considered. For electron-donating materials, the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level that is beneficial for high open-circuit voltage is much appreciated. However, a new issue in charge transfer emerges when matching such a donor with an acceptor that has a shallower HOMO energy level. More to this point, the chemical strategies used to enhance the absorption coefficient of acceptors may lead to increased molecular crystallinity, and thus result in less controllable phase-separation of photoactive layer. Therefore, to realize balanced photovoltaic parameters, the donor-acceptor combinations should simultaneously address the absorption spectra, energy levels, and film morphologies. Here, we selected two non-fullerene acceptors, namely BTPT-4F and BTPTT-4F, to match with a wide-bandgap polymer donor P2F-EHp consisting of an imide-functionalized benzotriazole moiety, as these materials presented complementary absorption and well-matched energy levels. By delicately optimizing the blend film morphology, we demonstrated an unprecedented power conversion efficiency of over 16% for the device based on P2F-EHp:BTPTT-4F, suggesting the great promise of materials matching toward high-performance OSCs.

We synthesized a novel material, namely palladized zero-valent zinc (Pd/ZVZ), and investigated its efficiency for the degradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The plated Pd significantly enhances the degradation rate of PBDEs by ZVZ at the optimum loading of 1% by weight. In the Pd/ZVZ system, very few lower BDEs were accumulated during the degradation of 2,2′,4,4′- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) and the final product is diphenyl ether, whereas the ZVZ system only debrominates BDE-47 to di-BDE and further debromination becomes very difficult. The degradation rates of BDEs by ZVZ greatly decreased with decreased bromination level, while in Pd/ZVZ system, the degradation rates of PBDEs did not show a significant difference. These indicate different mechanisms. This was confirmed by investigating the debromination pathways of the PBDEs in both systems. We determined that a H-transfer was the dominant mechanism in the Pd/ZVZ system. In addition, the reactivity of Pd/ZVZ to BDE-47 is pH-independent, which has a great advantage for various applications over ZVZ alone. Our study provides a new approach for the remediation of the PBDEs pollution. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Purpose: To describe factors (demographics and clinical characteristics) that predict patients who are at an increased risk of adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following discharge direct to home (DDH) from intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: Prospective cohort study of all adult patients who survived their stay in our medical-surgical-trauma ICU between February 2016 and 2017 and were discharged directly home. Patients were followed for 8 weeks postdischarge. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following DDH from ICU. Results: A total of 129 DDH patients were enrolled and completed the 8-week follow-up. We identified 39 unplanned return visits (URVs). There was 0% mortality at 8 weeks postdischarge. Eight potential predictors of hospital URVs (P< .2) were identified in the univariable analysis: prior substance abuse (odds ratio [OR] of URV of 2.50 [95% confidence interval: 1.08-5.80], hepatitis (OR: 6.92 [1.68-28.48]), sepsis (OR: 11.03 [1.19-102.29]), admission nine equivalents of nursing manpower score (NEMS) <24 (OR: 2.28 [1.03-5.04], no fixed address (OR: 22.9 [1.2-437.3]), ICU length of stay (LOS) <2 days (OR: 2.95 [1.28-6.78]), home discharge within London, Ontario (OR: 2.44 [1.00-5.92]), and left against medical advice (AMA; OR: 6.06 [2.04-17.98]). Conclusions: Our study identified 8 covariates that were potential predictors of URV: prior substance abuse, hepatitis, sepsis, admission NEMS <24, no fixed address, ICU LOS <2 days, home discharge within London, Ontario, and left AMA. A functional raspberry-like core-shell composite particle consisting of a conducting polyaniline (PANI) core and magnetic zinc ferrite shell is synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. The morphology and chemical structure of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite are evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An electrorheological/magnetorheological fluid consisting of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite dispersed in silicone oil with a particle concentration of 5 vol % is fabricated. Its rheological characteristics under external electric and magnetic fields are investigated by using a rotational rheometer. Under the electric or magnetic field, the PANI/zinc-ferrite particles form chain-like structures, demonstrating a solid-like state.

Copper sulfide nanoparticles have been employed as artificial mimics for peroxidase-like activity. In the present study, copper sulfide nanoparticles with four different morphologies have been synthesized by thermal decomposition of cyclo-tri-mu-thioacetamide-tris(chlorocopper(I)) complex ([Cu(3)TAA(3)Cl(3)]) at 200 degrees C in different solvents such as diphenyl ether, ethylene glycol, 1-octadecene and also without any solvent. Hierarchical copper sulfide nanostructures are formed when the complex is decomposed in the absence of solvent, in diphenyl ether, and 1-octadecene while in the case of ethylene glycol, randomly agglomerated nanoparticles are formed. The precursor complex ([Cu(3)TAA(3)Cl(3)]) as well as copper sulfide nanoparticles were characterized using an array of techniques and after characterization, the peroxidase-like activity of copper sulfide nanoparticles was investigated. Morphologically different copper sulfide nanoparticles possess different exposed facets and due to this, the peroxidase-like activity was different among different morphologies.

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) has recently attracted great concerns due to its potential contribution to climate change. It was reported that dissolved Fe(III) species can act as an efficient oxidant to catalyze the polymerization of volatile phenol substances, subsequently forming atmospheric BrC in aerosols. Since Fe in the atmosphere is commonly associated with clay mineral dusts, the transformation of phenol substances on Fe-bearing clay mineral surface is potentially important for BrC formation. In this study, taking guaiacol as the model phenol substance, its brown carbon formation process was investigated on Fe(III) modified montmorillonite under different relative humidities (RHs). The spectroscopic features and compositions of the produced BrC were systematically characterized. The results demonstrated that the interface FeOH2+ is the key species to promote the polymerization of guaiacol, and RH plays a significant role to influence the surface acidity of clay and the gas-to-particle adsorption of guaiacol. The BrC was produced with the most abundance and variety under moderate RH (similar to 33%), while higher RH (similar to 100%) accelerated the polymerization rate. Since aerosol moisture content might not largely influence the hydroxylation states of the surface bearing Fe(III) species, it signifies the importance of clay associated Fe(III) to catalyze the BrC formation in varied conditions Our study highlights the importance of clay mineral dust on the formation of BrC, and reveals the brown carbon formation pathways under environmentally relevant conditions.

Dispersion interactions are omnipresent in large aromatic systems and influence the dynamics as intermolecular forces. The structural preference induced by dispersion interactions is demonstrated to influence the excited state dynamics of diphenyl ether (DPE) using femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (TA) associated with quantum chemical calculations. The experimental results in aprotic solvents show that the S-1 state is populated upon irradiation at 267 nm with excess vibrational energy dissipating to solvent molecules in several picoseconds, and then decays via internal conversion (IC) within 50 ps as well as intersystem crossing (ISC) and fluorescence with a lifetime of nanoseconds. The polarity of the solvent disturbs the excited state energies and enhances the energy barriers of the ISC channel. Furthermore, the intermolecular dispersion interactions with protic solvents result in the OH-pi isomer dominating in methanol and the OH-O isomer is slightly preferred in t-butanol in the ground state. The hydrogen bonded isomer measurements show an additional change from OH-O to OH-pi geometry in the first 1 ps besides the relaxation processes in aprotic solvents. The time constants measured in the TA spectra suggest that the OH-O isomer facilitates IC. The results show that the OH-pi isomer has a more rigid structure and a higher barrier for IC, making it harder to reach the geometric conical intersection through conformer rearrangement. This work enables us to have a good knowledge of how the structural preference induced by dispersion interactions affects excited state dynamics of the heteroaromatic compounds.

In this work, 1,4-diphenyltriphenylene-grafted (14.2%) polysiloxane (DPTP) was successfully synthesized and statically coated on capillary columns as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The DPTP columns exhibited excellent efficiencies of 3646 plates m(-1) for a 30 m column and 3125 plates m(-1) for a 10 m column, as evidenced by naphthalene measurements at 120 degrees C, which demonstrated the good film-forming ability of DPTP. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the weight of DPTP is reduced by 2% at 380 degrees C. Separation of the polyethylene pyrolysis product indicated that the maximum allowable operating temperature of the DPTP column is 360 degrees C. The moderate polarity of the DPTP column was investigated in terms of McReynolds constants. The DPTP column was utilized to separate analytes, including aromatic isomers, fatty acid esters, ethers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, on the basis of the column’s strong pi-pi stacking, dipole-induced dipole, and dispersion interactions with solutes. In general, the DPTP column offers great potential as a novel stationary phase for separating various analytes due to its special structure and remarkable separation performance.

Bulk chemicals produced from renewable resources are receiving considerable attention due to the increase in sustainable practices. In this study, a novel, efficient, and sustainable strategy has been proposed to produce versatile petroleum based monophenols from the natural aromatic polymer, lignin, via the selective cleavage of its specific chemical linkages by a cost-effective catalyst, Ni/MgO. The results demonstrate that 93.4% of lignin is converted, yielding 15.0% monophenols in the presence of 20% Ni/MgO. Importantly, 42.3% of these volatile chemicals are found to be 4-ethyl phenol (the yield is 6.31%), a widely used fine chemical currently obtained from the petrochemical industry. Further comparative investigations on the raw and recovered lignin using heteronuclear single quantum correlation-nuclear magnetic resonance (HSQC-NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), quantitative C-13 NMR, and the alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation method reveal that the selective breakage of the ester bond between the p-hydroxyphenyl structural unit and the other fragments followed by decarboxylation is responsible for the good performance of the 4-ethyl phenol formation process. Therefore, the results of this work would provide new insights for producing value-added petrochemicals from renewable lignin.
