A CH2CI2 (350 mL) solution of 1-isopropyl-4-methoxy benzene (25 g, 166 mmol) and 3-chloro-propionyl chloride (21 mL, 216 mmol), at room temperature, was treated with AIC13 (33 g, 249 mmol) in 1-2 g portions over a 1 h period. Flash chromatography (10% EtOAc/Heptanes) yields 6-isopropyl-2, 3- dihydro-4H-chromen-4-one (7.5 g, 24%). Rf = 0.3. HRMS (ESI+) calc’d for C12Hl4O2 mlz 191. 1072 [M+H] + ; found 191.1071.
