Effects of Hydrophobic Modifications on the Solution Self-Assembly of P(DMAEMA-co-QDMAEMA)-b-POEGMA Random Diblock Copolymers

In this work, the synthesis and the aqueous solution self-assembly behavior of novel partially hydrophobically modified poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(oligo(ethylelene glycol) methyl ether methacrylatetabel) pH and temperature responsive random diblock copolymers (P(DMAEMA-co-Q(6/12)DMAEMA)-b-POEGMA), are reported. A low-volume air sampling method for legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in indoor environment using a newly developed sorbent mixture

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a series of stable and outstanding flame retardants bringing human exposure risks in indoor environment. However, sampling methods now available for BFRs are solvent-consuming and relatively complicated. This study provides a new option of low-volume air sampling device using cartridges with a sorbent mixture for different types of legacy and novel BFRs. In this study, we found that HC-C-18 sorbent is most suitable for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel BFRs (NBFRs) enrichment, and that NH2 for hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs). The sorbent mixture was optimized using a complex of HC-C-18 and NH2 sorbents with elution recovery of 69.4% +/- 7.9-117% +/- 10%, pumping-through recovery of 84.5% +/- 7.9-127% +/- 36%, and breakthrough recovery of 70.8% +/- 3.4-118% +/- 6% for PBDEs, NBFRs, and HBCDs in indoor air. A sequential elution was also achieved using hexane for PBDEs and NBFRs and ethyl acetate for HBCDs. The method was validated with field sampling at nine student dormitory rooms. For legacy BFRs, all the isomers of HBCDs were detected in the air of nine rooms with the median concentrations of 91, 33, and 25 pg/m(3) for (+/-)alpha-HBCD, (+/-)beta-HBCD, (+/-)gamma-HBCD, respectively, while PBDEs were hardly detected. In contrast, NBFRs were detected at total concentrations of 15-811 pg/m(3). Pentabromotoluene (PBT) was the most frequently detected NBFRs with a median concentration of 4 pg/m(3), followed by EHTBB at 56 pg/m(3) and HBBZ at 21 pg/m(3). For the risk assessment, the total hazard index value for air inhalation of BFRs was estimated at 6.1=10(-4)-0.35, which are consistently lower than 1, indicating no immediate health risk, while their long-term effects remain worth concerns.

Characterization of Olfactory Receptor Repertoires in the Endangered Snow Leopard Based on the Chromosome-Level Genome

Olfaction is a complicated process that begins with the specific binding of volatile odorant molecules to dedicated olfactory receptors (ORs) in the olfactory epithelium and plays a pivotal role in the survival of mammals. The OR subgenome of the snow leopard has remained largely unexplored, and thus, investigation of the OR system would shed light on the evolutionary dynamics of the snow leopard OR repertoires and genetic evidence for environmental adaptation. In this study, we conducted genome-wide identification and characterization of OR genes in the snow leopard and compared them to all other Panthera species. A total of 213, 294, 624, 305, and 253 functional OR genes were identified in the snow leopard, lion, jaguar, leopard, and tiger, respectively. The phylogenetic relationships of functional Panthera OR genes were illustrated, which comprised 69 families and 350 subfamilies distributed in two classes (Class I and Class II). Comparative analysis of the five Panthera species indicated 115 shared and 5 snow leopard-specific clusters. The potential odorant specificity of certain snow leopard OR genes was identified by similarities to human protein sequences and we identified odorants such as eugenol methyl ether that had the most OR genes. Since our references for odorants were from human studies, possible odorants from snow leopard-specific OR genes need further investigation. The lowest number of OR genes for the snow leopard among Panthera species possibly revealed the association between OR gene family contraction and high-altitude adaptation, which needed further and deeper investigation. This systematic study of OR genes in the snow leopard will provide a solid foundation for further study of olfactory function and variation in the snow leopard.

Wear and tribofilm characterization of bamboo CNT (B-CNT)-peek composite with incremental blending of submicron synthetic diamond particles

Wear characteristics modified on high functionality tribo poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composite fabricated through the spatial distribution of bamboo Carbon NanoTube (B-CNT) with incrementally blended networks of sub-micron high thermal conductivity synthetic diamond (SD) particles were studied. The composites were developed by the hot press sintering route and were characterized for their mechanical, thermal stability, chemical state, and tribological properties. On the addition of reinforcement particles, the hardness of the composite was increased by 25%, and thermal stability improved by about 25 degrees C due to the strengthening effect of diamond particles. FTIR reveals the existence of the chemical compatibility of reinforcements in the matrix. XRD results reveal that the addition of reinforcements in the matrix does not alter the structure of PEEK. Wear characteristics of PEEK composite were investigated by varying applied pressures. The coefficient of friction reduced to 30% for 0.5%SD & 0.75%B-CNT sample, and the specific wear rate was reduced to 39% for 1%SD & 1%B-CNT sample compared to neat PEEK, at maximum loading condition. The coefficient of friction and specific wear rate were reduced to a larger extent due to transfer film consisting of ferric oxide film confirmed by XPS oxygen region peak 531.85 eV and distorted polymer rings was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy.

Quasi-solid single ion conducting polymer electrolyte membrane containing novel fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfonimide) for lithium metal batteries

A novel synthesis route for a fluorinated poly (arylene ether sulfonimide) (PAESI) homopolymer with high molecular weight and excellent dispersity was developed. The sulfonimide anion moiety and -C(CF3)(2) functional group, located at the polymer backbone, provide for sufficient oxidative stability, single ion conducting (SIC) properties and increased mixability with PVdF-HFP to achieve a co-polymer, which facilitates formation of highly homogeneous and mechanically stable single ion conducting polymer electrolyte (SIPE) membranes in combination with ethylene carbonate (EC):propylene carbonate (PC) (1:1) and EC:dimethyl carbonate (DMC) (1:1) as solvents. Solvent uptake has a major impact on the ionic conductivity of these blend membranes, which was further elucidated by analysis of cation coordination and transport from atomistic molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to gain insight into lithium ion transport. Moreover, the thermal behavior of the novel single ion conducting polymer was investigated before and after lithiation, showing thermal stabilization of the sulfonimide group and the increase of the glass transition temperature (T-g). Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed high mechanical strength of the blend membranes and the observations in lithium plating/stripping experiments in Li parallel to Li- and Cu parallel to Li cells implied excellent stability against lithium metal and the penetration by lithium deposits. In lithium iron phosphate (LFP)parallel to Li cells, the SIPE membranes exhibited excellent cycling stability and rate performance.

Rheological Properties of Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels for Soft Tissue Engineering Applications

Hydrogels are cross-linked three-dimensional (3D) polymeric network. which can hold the water within its porous structure. They have recently been used in various biomedical applications. In this study injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels were prepared using different concentrations of 1.4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) as a crosslinker (1-5% w/w) and investigated their rheological. swelling and injectability properties. The results demonstrated that the theological characteristics of hydrogels enhanced with increasing crosslinker concentration. The elastic modulus of the hydrogels ranged from 280 Pa to 990 Pa. while the complex viscosities were found between 42 Pa.s and 190 Pa.s at an oscillation frequency of 1 Hz, These results clearly suggest that the injectable HA hydrogels are a potential candidate for various soft tissue engineering applications due to their highly tunable rheological properties.

Epoxidized soybean oil modified using fatty acids as tougheners for thermosetting epoxy resins: Part 2-Effect of curing agent and epoxy molecular weight

A series of bio-rubber (BR) tougheners for thermosetting epoxy resins was prepared by grafting renewable fatty acids with different chain lengths onto epoxidized soybean oil at varying molar ratios. BR-toughened samples were prepared by blending BRs with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A resins, Epon 828 and Epon 1001F, at different weight fractions and stoichiometrically cured using an amine curing agent, 4, 4 ‘-methylene biscyclohexanamine (PACM). Fracture toughness properties of the unmodified and BR toughened polymer samples-including critical strain energy release rate (G(Ic)), and critical stress intensity factor (K-Ic)-were measured to investigate the toughening effect of prepared BRs. It was found that the degree of phase separation and toughening were more controllable relative to similar polymers cured using the aromatic curing agent Epikure W, and the use of higher molecular epoxy resins produces a synergistic effect increasing the toughness much more than similar polymers made with lower molecular weight epoxy resins. Average BR domain sizes ranging from 200 to 900 nm were observed, and formulations with G(Ic), values K-Ic as high as 1.0 kJ/m(2) and 1.4 MPa m(1/2) were attained respectively for epoxy systems with T-g greater than 130 degrees C.

Dimensionally and oxidatively stable anion exchange membranes based on bication cross-linked poly(meta-terphenylene alkylene)s

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) is a key component for energy-conversion devices that enabling the use of non-noble electrocatalysts. After more than a decade of pursuit in alkaline-stable and high anion-conducting ionomers, aryl ether-free polyaromatics offer a promising candidate as an advanced AEM for use in fuel cell and electrolyzers. However, the traditional trade-off dilemma between conductivity and stability (e.g., chemical, dimensional, and mechanical stabilities etc.) of the membrane still remains. Here, we introduced a flexible bication cross-linker to doubly quaternary ammonium-tethered poly(meta-terphenylene alkylene) ionomers with high ion contents, aiming to improve the chemical and dimensional stabilities without compensate the ion-conducting merits. The designed flexible bication cross-linker is responsible for the microphase-separated morphology preservation in the cross-linked membranes. Although the water absorption decreased significantly as cross-linking content increasing, the ion conductivity of the cross-linked AEM was well retained, especially at elevated temperatures. Moreover, after cross-linking, a notable increase in chemical stability was observed, and the m-XPTPA40-2N with highest cross-linking density exhibited the best alkaline and oxidative stabilities. Owing to the mechanical robustness and high conductivity, a fuel cell fabricated with cross-linked membrane m-XPTPA40-2N showed a maximum power density of 302 mW cm(-2) at a current density of 614 mA cm(-2). Overall, the results of this study provide a simple but efficient strategy to improve the performance of AEM.

Thermodynamics of acetaminophen and bovine serum albumin partitioning in ternary aqueous solutions comprising polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether 250 and choline bitartrate: Liquid-liquid equilibria, volumetric and acoustic investigations

The present work reports the biocompatible and nontoxic aqueous biphasic system, ABS, for acetaminophen and bovine serum albumin, BSA, separation. First, the binodal curves and tie-lines for {polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether 250 (PEGDME(250)) + choline bitartrate ([Ch][Bit]) + water} system was measured at different tempera- tures under atmospheric pressure (approximate to 85 kPa). The phase separation in this ABS was studied by the salting-out coefficents obtained from tie-lines correaltion with setschenow equation. The results indicated that the biphasic region was enhanced by enhancing tempera tre. The experimental data were fitted by two semi-empirical equations induding Marchuk and Zafarani-Moattar equations for binodals and Othmer-Tobias, Bancroft, Osmotic virial equations, and e-or m-NRTL models for the tie-lines. Later, the performance of this ABS in acetaminophen and BSA partitioning was examined via calculation of partition coefficients and extraction efficiencies at different tie-lines and temperatures, the trend showed that the acetaminophen could be partitioned preferentially into the polymer-rich top phase with a single step extraction efficiency up to 80%, in where the BSA was effectively transferred into the [Ch][Bit]-rich bottom phase. In order to evaluate the driving-force for acetaminophen preferentially transferring to top phase, density and sound speed for systems (acetaminophen + PEGDME(250) water) and (acetaminophen – [Ch][Bit] + water) were determined at 298.15 K and the obtained results utilized for calculation the infinite molar volume and compressibility, and the transfer molar volume and compressibility. From density and sound speed results, it may be concluded that the favorable interactions between acetaminophen and PEGDME(250) is responsible for preferentially acetaminophen transferring into top phase.
